1913 Danzig Kar98a with dust cover

ax - hole
Finally after having this carbine for a few weeks today seem like the perfect day to do a full photo spread and data sheet. Went down to visit a good collector friend of mine a few weeks ago and after doing a couple hours of shooting our stuff. We ended up doing a trade deal afterwards. When he held my chassepot German captured Calvary carbine he produced this fine beauty and said would you be interested in trading. He's getting more into the Franco Prussian war era then I am. So it was like the match was made to be. This 98a had everything I wanted. I needed a Danzig, wanted it early, wanted it unit marked, needed to be original, wanted it to be almost all matching. The action cover was just another piece added to it. I never was on the hunt for that due to how rare and expensive they can be. But it made the deal so much better, in the end I couldn't be happier.

I will say this if it wasn't for me I don't think he would have traded it all or even sold it off he wanted it to go to a good home and to a friend. I tell new collectors all the time the best pieces are sold or traded off between collector friends not on GunBroker.

Anyway now for the carbine from what I can tell that dust cover is completely original and has been on the carbine since it came home. The stock show wear patterns that the dust cover has been with this 98a probably since the war. It is matching and has only a few mismatched parts but the buttplate being depot marked explains that. Still finding a nice 1913 Danzig is pretty scarce, from my records only around 23,000 were produced for that year. But I'm not complaining one bit about that either just adds to the cool factor. It is unit marked R.H.R.7 which I believe is for Reserve Hussar Regiment?

Oh and the muzzle cover and sling that was from buddy Mike he sold those pieces to me over the years! Again thanks Mike.

I'll be honest it has been awhile since I have posted a nice Kar98a here I believe almost five years now. Now the dry spell is over and enjoy the pictures!

Thanks for the detailed pics.

I like it a lot ! The blueing is good, stamps are neat.
With a dust cover, an original sling and the muzzle cap.

Pic sticky ? :bump:

That was a great find buddy; really on two levels. It's a pisser condition-wise and you've done a great job with accessories. Secondly, it's a hard maker/date combo. It's a home run for sure!

Third, as always, glad you take the time for good pics and description.

Looking forward to seeing the next couple you have coming. I'm hoping we both did well at the redneck auction. [emoji1787]

Thanks guys to tell you the truth I actually really do enjoy doing the pictures and data gathering on a collectable piece. If there is anything I missed please let me know. I have a couple other rifles I'm hoping to be posting up here in the next couple weeks but I need to get them first and I need to get them cleaned up first.

While I expected the rifle to be nice, this is considerably better than expectations, - you know any rifle ScottB had "in" his collection would be exceptional, but for a relatively rare combination this is better than expected. I expected more wear and use, and you can see the staining on the stock where the clamp stood.

As for the relative rarity of this rifle, - any pre-war in this condition, even a 98a, is a rare rifle. However, many do not realize that pre-war Danzig led in 98a production, Erfurt who we typically associate with the 98a and high production almost always lagged behind Danzig 1909-1913, though this was changing in 1913 and Erfurt would beat Danzig "Bigly" in 1914, but both would make the 98a in 1914. In 1913 Danzig is known into the early c-block and Erfurt the early a-block (Erfurt only broke into the b-block one time before 1914! In 1910)

Quite an exceptional rifle and trench cover! I know Scott was a high-end gun dealer for sometime, but I never have seen one from his "collection" show up in anothers hands, but I am sure it is common enough, as a collector of his status must wheel and deal, trade and barter to advance his collection, the stuff in high end collections often can't be gotten with cash alone.

Thank you for the kind words Paul yes this rifle belong to a good friend of mine he purchased this from Scott quite some time ago to be honest this was a pretty much one of the centerpieces in his collection honestly it was one of his favorites. But he really liked my chassepot captured carbine and offered this piece in trade. Now if somebody offered him a cash price for it I don't think he would have let it go but to tell you the truth I think he really wanted me to have it.

I will say this I'm going to miss that captured carbine but I'm so happy to finally get a pre-war carbine in my collection and he also ended up with a very nice piece as well. I think we're both extremely happy. I do have a few other rifles coming in Paul so keep an eye out on the Forum. I'll be posting up some pretty cool pieces hopefully the end of this month and the beginning of next month.

And Wolfgang that is an awesome picture you must have some incredible pictures in your collections sir!

Hell of a Karabiner 98, Jordan! You are absolutely right, the best exchanges are among collector friends. Thanks as always for the detailed photos, the reference thread benefits greatly from your contributions.
