Gew98 1908 Erfurt/1912 Spandau

Warrior1354

ax - hole
Been meaning to get this very interesting Gewehr 98 posted up after I bought it back in November of last year. So finally got the pictures done and the rifle cleaned up a little bit. Today was the perfect day too do it cold and a little snowy so no outside work for me today! The stock has a few isscues the screw end piece is missing for the crossbolt and the stock has a light coat of shellac or linseed oil. But I think my buddy who cleaned up the stock on my Danzig 1912/15 could work his magic on this rifle. Anyway out of all the Gewehrs in my collection I find this rifle one of the most unique and one of the most interesting variations. We know from the records Erfurt did not make any rifles in 1908 but why did that have these receivers? Maybe they were keeping them on hand for another rifle contract or possibly subcontract them out to another maker. Just so happens they did to Spandau who assembled these into a complete Gewehr in 1912. And boy did this rifle have a service life passed through two depots in it's lifetime. Pus the original barrel was counter-bored too, most likely due to firing rifle grenades. Even more shocking most of this rifle is still almost all matching only a few small components are mismatched. Have to say I own close to 15 plus Gewehrs now but this one has become quite a favorite of mine it's just that freaking cool!

Enjoy guys!

Thank you for the great display of an important rifle. This is the only prewar Spandau build using unfinished receiver I’ve ever seen. Glad you snagged it!

Thanks for the detailed photos. Definitely a damn nice pickup.

Thanks guys I think we all have picked up some extraordinary pieces last year and this year as well I look forward to see what we uncovered in the future.

Great photos, Jordan! This rifle is cool as can be, love those double dates, and fact that both dates are pre-war makes it all the better.

Thanks Cyprus and happy to contribute to the forum with good pictures. I always try to show everything the best I can.

And speaking of which more cool Gewehr 98 pictures came in!

Just curious has other rifles like this been posted here or is the first that was this fully detailed?

Been busy with the new G88 research thread, finished Steyr and Amberg, almost done with Loewe (tackling the easy ones first!) but have been meaning to look into this. Some lucky afternoon internet time I looked through 1912 Spandau, 3 recorded altogether, all d-blocks, below all d-blocks to place them into context, none earlier:

1912 Spandau 1533 d
1908-12 Erfurt-Spandau 2475 d
1908-12 Erfurt-Spandau 2878 d

1912 Spandau 5303 d (1.R.2.165)
1912 Spandau 5344 d
1908-12 Erfurt-Spandau 7301 d

**1912 Spandau 429 1.R.2.32 (suffix unknown, possibly d-block due to similar unit marking)

None similar 1911 or 1913

Interesting details Paul still it makes me wonder how many of these 1908 dated Erfurt left over receivers are out there. Have you recorded these being used by any of the other arsenals or makers by chance? Or have you only recorded them being used by Spandau in 1912 only?
