I have had this Luger for nearly a decade. It was in this condition when I bought it. The bore is actually in good condition in spite of what the external surfaces look like. It had lead deposits in the bore that I cleaned out and was surprised it was not dark and pitted. It shoots very well. The checkering on the wood grips are very crisp in the hand and not worn down. This is all matching except the magazine. I have always been curious about the finish. I would think that a 1938 s/42 would have been originally blued. But in the areas of no rust or browning from been rusty, the areas of low wear and even the internal metal surfaces look more grey than blued. Almost like it was originally phosphate finished. What do you guys think? Could bluing age like this and turn grey? I’ve never decided what to do about this or even if I should do anything about it.
I recall back in the early 90’s I found one in a LGS that was claimed to have been found in the attic of a WW2 veteran that brought it back. I don’t recall the maker but it was 1918 dated and had a similar grey look to it.
