Fair price for a pre-war PPK?

I’ve been doing some digging and can’t quite agree with myself on what a fair price is. Local guy is offering this up, said he got it from the vet directly. Finger extension has a chip, grips are not chipped, comes with the capture certificate. I know commercial PPKs are worth less but I also think the capture certificate adds value, how much I don’t know. He’s asking $1700 which still feels high given the condition. What are your thoughts?

I would say that is a bit high considering the finish is not perfect. The holster isn’t great and mag toe is cracked. The capture paper definitely is a plus though.

That’s what I thought too, I thought 1400-1500 was probably more in line with a “fair” price given the overall condition. I don’t like to rip people off, but I also don’t like to overpay.

The whole rig is in rough condition, gun, holster and chipped mag. Papers are nice but doesn't elevate it near that price range.
I'd think $900 to $1000 max.

A good finger mag is $300 in its own right.

True enough, to replace it would be costly. I think it’s probably best to pass this one up and hope for something else better to pop up. I don’t normally for for “beat up” but the capture doc intrigued me.

I would agree on the price being too high...but I can't keep from thinking that, in the not-too-distant future, $1500 is going to seem like $150 today. In other words, inflation may become a real problem. So, find another, better one, fast!

$1700 feels a little high, but $900-1000 is way low. Sure it would be nice to get it for that, but I think it's a pipe dream in the current market. If you could get it for under $1500 I doubt you would have many regrets down the road.

Thanks for the feedback. Looking around at other commercial models the 900-1000 in this shape is totally fair for the rig in the shape it’s in I believe. That being said it comes down to what does the piece of paper add to the value. We came to a price that I think we’re both happy with so I think it’s a positive.

I have heard or read that capture papers may add 10% to the value. In the past, I recall older collectors thinking little to no value was added. Younger collectors seem to value documentation and proof of history more than older guys. So...I would say the guns with papers will increase in value at a greater rate than those without papers. This is just my opinion and best guess, of course. I prefer things with documented history.
