I was lucky enough to have an opportunity to purchase this rifle recently. My friend and a member here on the forum, went to the Tulsa show. He ended up purchasing a really nice P38 and a K98 from a collector there, this collector mentioned that he had a few other K98k’s that he didn’t bring to the show and offered to email Larry photos of the other rifles. This was one of the rifles. When I was evaluating this rifle, I looked in the book and discovered that this rifle is the example in the book, page 396-397, at one point this was Bob in OHIO’s rifle. Since the rifle was in Bob’s possession, I see that someone at some point changed the locking screws out. The photos in the book have e/63 locking screws, it now has e/280. Maybe someone could comment on weather the early Borsigwalde rifles might have some e/63 parts means they were an Oberndorf satellite. The rifle now also has a 97 numbered rod which would be matching, but there are not waffernts on the rod. On an early rod like this, wouldn’t the rod be marked e/280 with 97 if it were original to the rifle from the time that it left the factory? I decided to post the rifle means it doesn’t look like Bob in OHIO ever posted it. I know there are photos in the book, but I really like to look at photos of other forum members rifles on my large flat computer screen. The rifles stock has a really great look to it, like alot of the early prewar walnut K98's do. The extra e/280 barrel inspection is kinda a neat feature to this rifle as well as the e/211 to e/280 transition. If someone wants to see a feature not photoed, please ask and I will provide.

Jory awesome find and gorgeous rifle, these prewar guns are always my favorite :hail:

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but the three '37 S/243's in the pic reference section appear to have e/63 lock screws. Perhaps an owner after Bob thought e/280 would be correct and replaced them, or perhaps both would be considered correct. Interested to hear what the experts have to say.

Lovely Rifle, thats my sort of K98,i like the early ones and sold off most of my post 1942.Picture sticky please.

Beautiful...thanks for sharing. K98k's aren't my collection focus but I do want an early walnut stocked rifle so bad it almost hurts....haha.

Great looking Kar 98k. You just can't get any more original/correct than this !
Thanks for posting and all the great pics.
Tks,
Bob32268

Hi Jory, thank you very much for the detailed pics, that's obviously a textbook rifle (transition from e/211 to e/280) !

Looking at p.399, there's a 1938 with a e/63 locking screw, so yes, the e/63 screws are/were the original parts. Funny thing: the datasheet p.408 does not mention e/63, while it is clear on the pic.
Damn, it looks like the previous owner also changed the e/63 ejector box screw !
Have you had a look at the tiny pieces we discussed about your last ax rifle ? Cleaning rod nut, bolt sleeve lock screw, etc...

I would be cool if you can get the screws back.

With help of a couple members here, I was able to locate a set of e/63 locking screws and also an e/63 ejector box screw. I was able to return the rifle to original spec.
