1917 Et. Continsouza Berthier Carbine and Bayonet

Nabbed this last weekend at the gun show. Dimond in the rough.

Its all matching, 1917 dated barrel. Et. Continsouza was a Gramophone and Cinematography company who made recievers and barrels only, the rest being assembled I believe at Châtellerault. Only downsized is the cracked handguard ring. Its marked N for the cartridge update and has the handguard cutout from post WW1 refurbishments.

Noticed some odd markings on stock, like the C, as well as what appears to be a Waffenamnt mark at the underside stock heel.

Is this a common Buetewaffen marking ?

Regardless its my first French gun and I fell in love with the stock repairs, some real TLC from the armory guys.

Very nice! That's a good find for sure. The depot stamp is in the usual spot for these and is the 'Naumburg eagle.' I have one similarly marked. Other tip-offs to German capture are the blued bolt and the numbered rear sight. This was not done in original French production. Check around on small components for similar numbering, especially the barrel bands. I think the numbers on your bolt flat are German, too.

Nice carbine, congratulations!

Depot stamp is what we thought might be Naumburg, but after further study I am fairly confident this is a variant of HZa Ingolstadt. See my thread on the other forum.

Nice French rifle. It was reworked by the German depot at Ingolstadt. Renumbered bolt font looks like Ingolstadt too. A better pic of it in less harsh light would be nice.

Awesome to hear. I'll take the bolt further apart soon and get some more pics.

Wanted to get confirmation before posting in Buetewaffen page.

Thanks, I remembered it being thought of as Naumburg for a long time, but forgot what the current theory was. I've not seen many captured French rifles stamped with depot markings (aside from the Krakau depot assembled R35s, sort of a class in and of themselves), but those that are seem frequently to have this marking.

Very cool Berthier carbine! The only German Berthier collectables I own are cool pictures.

I'm hoping to add one of these to my collection some day always on the hunt for them. Takes a keen eye but they are out there! Again thanks for sharing!

Yes I enjoyed that photo you shared recently.

Definitely cool seeing them in period action.

Thanks so much for the compliments guys. A rifle with lots to tell just by looking at it.

Hope these work for you. Looks like an extra serial stamping on bolt head. And a couple more contractor parts markings on some of the internals.

Got an update earlier this year, haven't had time to post. Found quite the perfect bayonet for this Buetewaffen.

This is of course a Berthier bayonet but has the traditional peg that attaches to the leather frog, changed to a German style of one. Captured and altered to be issued along with the rifles.

I find the third fuller on the top of the blade to be quite intresting.

I assume this bayonet was for Saint Etienne production, as G prefix, the upper M16 carbine was dated probably around end of 1917, anyway the scabbard has a german hook on it. The bayonet is not blued which normally german refurbishment were done. Hard to say both pieces are long time ago together, maybe yes. Nice bayonet offcoarse.
Bayonet was serialed to a M92 carbine produced pre 1900.
