Early 1944 Maschinenhaus Ferlac piece with matching numbers (470A); bayonet dated 43 and scabbard 4. Assembled with blade blanks from 1943 numbered and matched to 1944 scabbards. There are perhaps a couple of thousand of these pieces produced early in 1944. They can also be found with the two line serial numbering system used by Ferlac in previous years. The 43/44 are not encountered in a single serial numbering run; rather they are scattered at random amongst "normal" 44 dated examples. A variety of spine markings can be found - 43, 43 lined out with 44 next to it, 4 stamped over the 3 in 43, 44, and 4 only. Some blade spines are also stamped with a SWE WaA938. Scabbards are similar; some stamped bym4 others bym44. The inverted WaA938 stampings to the pommel and scabbard finial ball are almost always present on Ferlac S84/98. Even at this late stage, Ferlac continued to use a glossy deep blued finish which was attractive but did not withstand field use very well.

Interesting sub-variant. My bym | 44 bayo has a matched bym | 4 scabbard, Sn 138 | A. Likely the two variants "mix & match" early in the A-bloc. Full set of WaAs as well...

Very nice set and great info as always. Thank you!
