Deaths head?

Let me start off with while I have almost no knowledge on the DH p08s besides the fact I know they are hotly contested. I found this gun listed as just a shooter with no mention of the deaths head marking which is why I bring it to you guys. Right away even with my limited knowledge I’ve never seen a double date stamped over a DH so I’m already skeptical but I figured I’d see what you guys think. Practically nothing matches on this gun either hence shooter listing.

There was a 1918/1920 DH pistol sold by Legacy some while back. It also appeared that the DH was stamped prior to the 1918/1920 on that one as well. Ryan will certainly have more to say on this, but I believe the one you have pictured is legit and worth purchasing if you can reasonably acquire it.

For some reason these didn’t get posted with the original post. Barrel appears to be Crown N marked not sure the significance of the other markings

Looks real. Reworked by the DDR in 1953 (looks like July maybe).
Thanks I posted it on Stills forum seems to be the consensus there as well. I’m going back and forth picking it up gonna see if I can shave a little off the asking price it’s already priced as a shooter but the buff and reblue sucks.

Thats what would keep me away from it. An interesting, historical piece nonetheless.
The way I look at it I’ll never pay the full price a DH normally goes for and given that the 1920 stamp is pretty clearly stamped OVER the DH I think it pretty decisively proves these were done in ww1 not an SS job. Not to mention the cool anecdote of it going through ww1, Weimar Republic, ww2, and being reworked by east Germany. I’m getting into rust blueing anyway so if I can get the price right I can at least make it look more presentable.

No, it was an SS rework, circa 1938.

Also, please don't refinish this. The buff and reblue were probably done by the DDR during rework. It is the "original" finish (though apparently now mismatched). If you are looking for some sort of project, there are better guns to work on. I would happily take this example off your hands if you are not super interested in it.

I’ll post some more pictures but this isn’t an East German reblue the whole gun has been buffed and someone also poorly restrawed the small parts. Can you link me to any good articles tying these to the SS all I’ve been able to find are posts of guys arguing back and forth on them. Also how do you come to the conclusion it was done in 1938? I thought most of the theory was this was done in the early thirties for the SS gun theory.

I don't know if you have looked at a lot DDR reworks, but their blueing is often heavily buffed.
After looking at the pics looks like you were right the poorly restrawed parts threw me off I won’t be getting it as I was on the phone with the seller unfortunately someone else bought it I always have the worst luck haha

We have all been there. Walked away to do some quick research and by the time you get back it’s gone. Kicked myself a lot of times over the years.

Yep just wanted to get all the opinions I could and literally while on the home he said it just sold haha. Fortunately he also had a Byf 41 for a good price so I got that instead so now I have a Luger from all the war years from Mauser so I guess it worked out.
