MO Mm410B

I recently acquired this Mauser Mm 410B .22 Schonzeitbusche (off-season small game hunting rifle) from a local source. While not a trainer it shows that MO was still producing very fine commercial arms in the late war period.

After reviewing Jon Speed’s book on MO small bore rifles it is not clear when this one was made but likely in the latter part of 1944. The stock has late characteristics of a cheek piece, and capped pistol grip. The serial number is between the two pictured in Speed’s serial number list and is probably within the last five hundred produced, including a few that could have been produced under French occupation.

This specimen, reportedly imported from Sweden, is in excellent condition. The metal is 98% original with high quality bluing. While the walnut stock has some handling marks it is in very good+ condition. The rifle is all matching with a mirror bore. It is doubtful that 1,000 rounds have been fired in it.

IMO this rifle may have been sent to Sweden as part of the commerce related to German wartime acquisition of raw materials and/or foreign hard currency.

A search of auction sites indicate that while a limited number of Mm 410B rifles with the early style stock have been sold in the US I could find no sales of this version with the late stock style. I think this is a unique specimen.

Beautiful rifle, that’s a great find! Late Oberndorf commercials in general are real tough.

That is a late one, and a very nice example!

Thanks,

For comparison this is a picture of an earlier Mm 410 from about 1931. Old style receiver but with same 5 shot magazine.

I will have to dig out my Mm 410 B, I thought that it was fairly late, but now cannot remember. I am confident that it does not have a cheek piece.

Like yours it has a mirror bore and is fantastically accurate.

There are some differences between the earlier and “B” magazines. They look almost identical but the curve of the two are a little different, the overall length and the lock tab location are different also.

My early rifle can use the later mag but feels different when inserting, but will feed ok.

Fine rifles above!

Some photos..
The shorter magazine is the “B” magazine.

I read about but then forgot about that detail. Just looked at mine closely. The magazine differences are as you describe. They interchange and feed fine. French MAS 45 trainer mags work in both rifles as well.

Could the receiver be left over from DSM34 production?

Love the rear sights on these "higher" end commercials, adjustable for windage. Add the superb bluing on these and it puts these commercials over the top.

Interesting mag release. Is it convenient and function good?

Mag release is a very functional design. Carried over to the MAS 45 trainer built under French occupation.
