In "Death from Above" (1st Edition), Dugelby and Stevens wrote (p.117) that there was at least 2101 "early" FG42s produced (including prototypes i.e 50 type C and 50 type D).
There may have been at least 2000 Type1/Type E as #1999 was in Byron Vickery's collection and is shown in the book.

However, one piece of evidence that the authors do not quote is a letter written by Kurt Student to Göring entitled "Stand und Weiterentwicklung der Fallschirmtruppe" dated November 10th, 1942.
The original document is in the Bundesarchiv, but a translation in English can be found online here:

Here is the interesting paragraph:

Student's plan to get his 2000 rifles by Christmas was disrupted : according to Waffen-Revue #39, because they were trying to make a "Wunderwaffe" (combination of various weapons) and the numerous trials involved.
The earliest pics that I know of FG42s are dated May 1943 (northern France), according to vet accounts, FG42s were issued in June/July 1943, the final report of Luftwaffe testing team was dated July 2nd, 1943 and the first manual D. (Luft) T.6194 was published July 21st, 1943.
