Looks like a Spanish Civil War rifle. The Poles shipped a lot of rifles to Spain.

Is the top of the receiver blank/scrubbed?

It think it is a 1920's Polish 98AZ carbine, a copy of the German WW1 98AZ carbine. Probably captured by the Germans in 1939, recaptured from the Germans in 1944 or 1945 and accepted into French service after WW2.

Typical Polish made Model KAR 98 manufactured with old German and new parts for the Spanisch Civil War , not in use with the Germans or afterwards in French service, this kind of cut-out for the sling on the butt stock is also normal for Polisch rifles, many real German captured Kar 98 az in use with the Pools after WW I got his too....this is a real WWI manutactured German oneDSC_0625k.jpg ....Figuur1.jpgDSC_0623p.jpgPolisch...P on the buttstock....DSC_0622p.jpg
In the Spanisch Civil War many type of guns came from everywhere with no marks on the receiver .......many orders of the gun factory's in the 1930's for "China" disappeared in secret to Spain.....

I didn't know that, I tought the "Berthier" cut out was only done by the French. What's the source of your information? Which book or website with period pictures?

Sorry guys this is beside the discussion of the Spanish K 98..... UNPROFOR1994 , many sources .. , the Polish Mausers are not that well known .
Just fill in on your computer " WZ 29 " The main Polisch rifle in service in WW II, many got this cut out for a sling......karabinek_792mm_wz29.gif

Thank you for the information, I didn't know that Polish 98AZ carbines and other types had a similar cut out and side bar as the K98k's in French service.

These scrubs as they are so called were to hide the country or origin. Poland did this when rifles were sold to spain. The Czechs did this when they sold new post was lion crested k98's to Israel. Argentina did this to their mausers when sold to Paraguay for their revolution. This was an attempt to hide county of origin of arms supplies back to countries and to keep them out of the conflicts.

Lol I took out the bolt! Oops safety went off what a pain!! Haha spent an hour trying to figure it out and only took 20 secs to fix once figured out yeah so polish 98az hmmm that's cool! I thought it was a 1937 mauser even early awesome! I paid $185 with 150 rds for it worth it I think?!

So then I have these interesting marks?!
