Unusual 98K Cleaning Rod

Taking pictures of some of my 98Ks and noticed the cleaning rod on one of them is different, I have never noticed one like this before, here are a couple of pictures for opinions.

Looks like a poor turning job resulting in the rod being a bit thinner a few inches behind the patch head and the "bump" at the rear end of it. Something like this could have happened almost anytime. However, I note a lot of fine turning lines around the shaft and don't think post WW2 or repros are this crude, so rod might well be of late WW2 manufacture.
 
M24/47 and M48 Yugo rods, although thicker than K98 rods, often show the same taper right next to the head.
