VZ-24 Sniper that just sold

Hello all,

In the past few weeks I've been trying to educate myself on the minefield that seems to be VZ-24 rifles in sniper configuration. I gather that only a few of these were imported complete in the 90's and they should be sporting an IOR scope per Romanian requirements. Drudging through that one infamous thread on the subject yielded even more questions for a novice intent on one day owning one. I'd like to do my due diligence before hand.

Have there been any updates in the past 7 years concerning these rifles? Any verification that they were indeed used during wartime or does the post-war theory hold true. I've seen a few examples with PEM scopes, others with your generic Hensoldt-Wetzler, and even a few with what seem like simple World War 1 Rathenow scopes with the single bell.

This example just sold on GB for around $1700. I'd like to know your thoughts on the rifle. The bracket has a strange prefix stamp at the base (the font looks okay but I've yet to see one so long), its obviously an incorrect scope for the Romanian contract snipers, the bracket itself looks brand new, etc. I understand the brackets were replicated in India at one point but those were prominently marked MADE IN INDIA.

Does this look like a legitimate example to you? I'm trying to find a good baseline for these and I think it would be helpful to get a rifles authenticity on record in case it (inevitably) shows up for sale again.

Thank you for the reply Sniper40. I saw the Czech acceptance proofs but I've seen mention of a sale to Romania in 1939 that included some E38 rifles. Not sure if this is correct. I'm trying to figure out how this Czech proofed VZ-24 ended up in the same configuration as the post war Romanian snipers. Either it's a legitimate purpose built rifle or someone bought a reproduction mount and bases. I figured someone here would know.

I've never seen one of the Romanian Vz.24 sniper rifles other than an IOR scope that would had convinced me for being original.

Thanks Absolut. Were there a few that were imported without the telescope but fitted with the mount? Does the Romanian prefix on the scope mount look wrong to you?

I'm not from the US and therefore cannot tell you on what was imported to the US and not. Over here in Europe funnily the Romanian Vz.24 sniper rifles are all with scopes and mounts, but all reworked, whereas it seems those which weren't reworked but also lacked the scope and mount were exported to the US.

The scope bracket on the particular rifle looks odd to me, but I can't tell why.

I have the VZ-24 mount in hand and have attached some photos. Interestingly sports a Czech made Lovec 4x. This doesn't seem to be one of IO's Made in India mounts although it did come off an IO import rifle with Czech acceptance proofs. I believe those were casted and this does have machining marks. Obviously not the correct IOR telescope. SRB STYS looks to have been a pre war producer and would eventually merge with Meopta (and co).

I know the Czechs tooled around with a small batch of Zeiss scopes pre war. Its curious that it would have a somewhat less common Czech made scope on it and sport a serial # with Romanian prefix on the base.

Any thoughts on this setups authenticity? I wasn't around when the repops were available so would love to hear any opinions from those who saw their quality first hand. In the off chance that the mount may be original I'd love to know. I've also seen an image of a VZ 24 with some sort of claw mount system sporting what looks like a Lovec 4x. Part of the Robert Jensen collection according to the caption.

The scope is definitely just a placeholder someone put on and has no connection with how it was originally built or issued. Those IOR scopes are a big tube (can't remember for sure if it was 30mm) which is why there are the spacers which I assume are plastic (they are actually nice spacers and I wouldn't mind getting a set for my mount).

Here are pics of my original mount if it is helpful:

Sadly I have seen some of the repro mounts where they have milled off the made in India marking and kind of tried to simulate a milled look versus cast. So hard with these since documentation is so thin. The base and mount number is so bizarre to me. Some rings match but a lot of times its a hodgepodge of base and mount numbers.

All I need now is to find that ever elusive IOR scope for my set. I'm using a Zeiss Zielvier for now since it is period correct at least.

Thanks for the reply, Hatrick. Put it under magnification (am a watchmaker) and can confirm this mount is milled on every surface. I guess it's possible that someone took a light pass over every single surface to replicate milling marks but hell, the setup time for some of those cuts would be absurd!

The spacers are quite nice. I've attached some photos for some reference. "4" marking matches an identical mark inside the rings themselves. Let me know if you'd like any measurements of these for your reference. They work very well.

I guess hard facts are not in the cards for this mount and I'll have to live with it being an unknown quantity. Hopefully the images here will at least be a reference for someone researching these down the line. Content is king as they say.

VZ-24 Sniper Reproduction mount on Ebay

I actually just bought one of these off the chap for one of my Romanian snipers. He had them priced at around $500 for a bit but then dropped it down to $350 last week. I should have it in hand next week and will report back. I could see the price of the VZ 24 snipers jump significantly now that there's a mount available. According to the maker, here are the differences between the original.

"Rings are 30mm. Mount is exact in every detail except two, a round fillet ahead of the rear dovetail, which is square on the original, and the capture machining of the thumb screw (absent)."

If anyone overseas has a spare IOR scope or knows of one that is available I'd be extremely grateful for any help finding one. I have an original rife and mount and I currently have a period Zielvier scope on it but I really want to find that correct IOR scope to make it right.

Thanks.

This will be a tough task. In all the years I only remember a single IOR scope with bracket mount that got sold on eBay from Romania.

I can’t remember how long I’ve been looking for one of those IOR scopes. Prob more rare than the dr wohler scope for the SIG510 (amt) rifle. I am convinced I’ll never find one in the wild without being connected to the rifle. Idk.

I've just come to terms that my Romanian snipers will have to live with incorrect scopes for at least my lifetime. That being said, I still think they're the best value for the money for someone looking for a scoped military Mauser that doesn't rely on poorly made reprop mounts from overseas.

I received my mount from the eBay chap. Overall its very nice and I appreciate that he left some meat on the rear dovetail to allow a custom fit. Those Romanian dovetailed mounts get pretty beat up over the years all exposed sans bracket but I managed a nice snug fit with a triangular file (one safe side.)

One thing I'm not to keen on are the stainless clamping screws. They're a bit too bright and soft.

Also keep in mind that you'll need spacers for the 30mm rings. I made some in cad and 3d printed them and they work very well for my Dural-Dialytan 4x. Here's a drawing if anyone could benefit.

If anyone needs a set let me know. Will probably turn some out of aluminum eventually.

Seller did forget the rear adjustment screws which is why they're missing in the photo. Should be in the mail tomorrow.
