Gewehr 98 DWM 1909 3366a

One of my favorites. Unfortunately it has a bulged barrel and the stock has a chip out of the side next to the trigger guard. Still, it’s a great example of how nice pre-war Gewehren were. Glad I got it, likely saved it from being hacked up for the receiver.

All matching but for the rod, which is number matching, but I added it later. What’s interesting on this one is the extra acceptance: in the back of the receiver bridge, on the stock next to the barrel serial, and over tops of the c/FW cypher. It also has a couple on the numbers I suspect are pre-serial assembly numbers: barrel and receiver are 85, then trigger guard and floor plate are 91.

I too am glad to see more of Cyrus here, his absence was noticed!

I am especially grateful for his presence when he brings a nice DWM with him! Away from trends, but 1909 is a scarce year for any G98, though while the arsenals were engaged with 98a production DWM/WMO did take up most of the slack. Still you can never get too much of pre-war DWM & WMO!

Most appreciated is the thorough examination, this is far from common in trends, often rifles are little more than receiver details... so very often theories or "conclusions/stories" often revolve around 2 or 3 thoroughly examined rifles amidst a group of poorly reported "filler". But this is the nature of history itself, so-called historians often weave elaborate theories based upon fragments overlaid with their own prejudices to tell a story, which is hardly a science (another "profession" "who sings the song of those whose bread they eat" as Schopenhauer so famously described his profession, a statement more relevant today than ever before...), but at least we recognize our deficiencies and shortcomings!

Bulged Barrel

Is that bulge in the barrel 10-12 inches down from the muzzle? If yes probabaly due to firing rod grenade.

Is that bulge in the barrel 10-12 inches down from the muzzle? If yes probabaly due to firing rod grenade.

The bulge is actually right belie the muzzle, almost like some dirt got in there or something. A machinist told me it was fixable, but I sort of like it the way it is.

I would leave the bulge alone. You can fix it, but like everything, it is a part of the rifles history.

Forgot to send you stock pictures, glad I saw this. Will send them shortly!
