Help with authenticity - First time buyer

Here is a rifle that I am looking to purchase, it appears to be in very nice condition. This would be my first K98 purchase and I want to make sure that it is what he says it is. I have looked at some forums on the stamping of serial numbers but I just can't be sure if anything has been reground/restamped. I have some more pictures as well.
I would appreciate any help, Thank You!

I think the bolt cocking piece is renumbered, any pics of the rear of the bolt?, and stock restamped?, any more pics of the rifle channel and hand guard, ser # ...

Chicken on stock also restruck!:faint:

I was going to say that too! Known fake stamp and worse you can still see the faint original under and offset. Least they could have tried to line it up better? Lame

Wow. Looks like I've got a lot of learning to do! I appreciate all of the responses. I know there are a lot of fakes on Gun Broker, I don't really know of any other sites that have a better reputation. Thanks again

Wowzer indeed.... very bad karma on that one, and the seller knows better too, unless he was very transparent with his description....

Provide the link to that honker and we'll turd alert it.

Hang out here, you'll learn. We compiled this database of vetted originals to assist:

And this fake stamp library. The stamps that the scumbag used to hump that bolt are well known and been around at least 15 years. In fact, I believe they are the first humper stamps listed. You'll find them here:

You can tell by the way the firing pin protrudes from the cocking piece that it has been ground down before renumbering and the numbers 1,2 & 5 on the bolt shroud are the wrong font.
If you look at the restruck numbers that are the correct size and font on the bolt and compare them to the original stamps on the floorplate and TG you'll see that the ends of the originals are very much squared off and the ends of the fake stamps are slightly rounded. This is a pretty high class doink job and would certainly have fooled me when I was starting out.

He did say the stock "may have" been restamped. I never even noticed it until someone pointed out you can see the original stamp still. Other wise he called it all matching. Something about those bolt numbers didn't seem quite right to me. I'm definitely glad that I checked on here first!

Thank you for going into depth about some differences, helps us new guys learn more! The amount of restamped rifles out there truly blows my mind.

I'm still new to collecting myself and almost made an expensive mistake buying a "matching" rifle off Gunbroker. Luckily I found this place right before I hit buy it now.

Gunbroker is a minefield for fakes. Your best bet is to be patient and buy a vetted rifle from the trader. I have a nice matching K98k coming this week that I got off a well known member. Also, if you're serious about collecting, I'd highly recommend the Karem & Steves books. I reference mine all the time.
