Advice on potential JP Sauer purchase

Seller wants $650. Rifle is duffle cut and bolt m/m. Missing the band spring. Initial pictures seem like the rifle is a little rough. Is it worth trying to clean up and restore or should I save up and spring for something a little nicer. Just looking for outside opinions on this rifle. Thanks for any advice

I would go for it. (I'm a sucker for Sauers anyway:facepalm:) I have seen a lot worse , go for a lot more! JMTCW.

Some people pay already such a price for a RC. It's a Sauer & Sohn from 1940 and looks like a "w" block, late 1940 production. I wouldn't clean up/restore to much.

Kroil oil or ballistol oil using some bronze wool will clean that up. Just takes patience and care.

Not a knock on bronze wool, but I'd start with Kroil on a clean white cloth like an old t-shirt or wash cloth. You'll be surprised how much it will pull off.

Also totally agree with his prior comment that true bolt m/m for $650. don't show up often. Not a 'steal' per se but definitely at the very low end of that price range.

I’m a big fan of nylon brushes and makes cleaning and maintenance so much easier. As for this rifle, I’d say go for it. An honest, bolt m/m bringback workhorse is certainly worth that if not more!
