byf 44 K98k, Gunbroker Gamble

Picked this up off Gunbroker, came into my FFL today. Admittedly I went into this purchase with the tiniest amount of knowledge and rolled the dice on this rifle since I was just looking for a shooter. The seller claims "matching numbers" but it seems to me like maybe an attempt at forging matching numbers? Would love the input from an expert. The stock I know for sure is not original. The serial on the barrel and receiver have both been ground off as well as rough machine marks on top of the receiver.

Stock numbered near the buttplate like the Yugoslav rework fashion. You did note about the stock though.

With a “ground off serial number on the receiver”, I see trouble ahead with the Feds!
Idk. It sure appears to me the grinding was done BEFORE the byf and fire proof were stamped.

Also, lots of original factory guns have no serial number on the receiver as it was moved to the barrel as seen here.

I found that this rifle was cataloged on this site 13 years ago from a Gunbroker post. Searched the serial number 30065k and "k98k" on Google and it brought up a thread from this forum.

"30065k NIM, GB, numbers matching barreled action in mismatched stock. No# byf 135 135 STGWLS, #ed lengthwise (30065) byf 135 SFP. Blued. #ed barrel shank. No# receiver."

Really fascinating to find this.
