D.R. 63 bayonet

Here is my first Deutsche Reichsbahn bayonet. The bayonet is in very nice condition, unsharpened blade without a maker's mark and matching assembly numbers. There are a few WaA32 stamps on internal parts.

Looks nice marked, how is the width of blade under crossguard?, normally the DR bayonets should be wout WaA proof. This is a early proof, corespond with early type RBD bayonet with KS98 type scabbard.

That is a visually appealing bayonet. Congratulations on your first DR, I hope any others you find are as nice.
Thanks for sharing.

Alot of the narrow pattern blades are E/82 marked as this one is.
A blade width measurement would help ID this variant.

I measured the blade, near the crossguard 25 mm, in the middle 24 mm and close to the tip 22 mm.

25 mm width speaks for normal S84/98 blade, anyway this profile is typical on complete blade, so is possible this is a narow model even with more brighter ricasso as typical to see as majority of blades has 24 mm width. You could measure the thickness of blade, anyway is most real correct Deutsche Reichsbahn piece even with this stamps presented.

I would tend here to narrow pattern blade, it should be lighter in weight as normal S84/98.

Andy that profile looks like a std. 3rd model S84/98.
Average blade width at crossguard is 25mm for standard pattern, 23.5 to 24mm for Narrow Pattern.
I will be posting a unique variation of a Narrow Pattern with blade width of 22mm for discussion.

I dont known but the scabbard is matching, and this is a clearly KS98 type scabbard, secondly the blade width in middle of blade should be 25mm instead of 24mm, so i believe this is a transition piece to clasical narrow pattern with full width 24mm and less.

The bayonet is an early standard pattern to my eye. And confirmed by the measurements ......

Yes the piece could be made by Coppel or Eickhorn in period of 1934/5 as both have the E/82 proof on their pieces, it could be for shorter time used on other Solingen firm too. Evidently it was used on Standart Mauser rifle, but the bayonet looks like lightened to compare with S84/98 used by Army. The weight test would help here. Have measured WuK30 and the 24mm width of blade is on end of fuller, 70% of blade lenght is the width more or even 25mm and on place where is normally 24 have this piece only 22mm.

Have been working on a study of S84/98 blade width trends that is nearing completion. Some interesting information to be posted soon that fits right in with this thread.
