e.pack & s. bayonet K98 ID please

No oil on wooden grips. Oil won`t hurt bakelite grips ,but no need to put oil on them. I carefully remove grips (if it won`t bugger up the screws or make them worse if all ready buggered) and wipe the grips off with a cloth that has a dab of windex on it. Do not get the wooden grips too wet, never soak them in anything. The bakelite is pretty much water/moisture proof. I have put Renaissance Wax on a set of dull scratched up grips. Brought some of the shine back and hid light scratches. If wooden grips are really dirty takes a little more effort and wiping. Ren Wax works well on clean wooden grips. I try to not do a lot to my S84/98III bayonets other than clean them and oil the metal.

The bayonet came today that I ordered on eBay. It was listed as an E.PACK & S. WEHRMACHT K98 Bayonet.
Here’s what I received:

The frog is a Gerber(?) GEBR GRAF 1942 KUCHENHEIM

And Lastly, the bayonet is a 43 asw #7967 R. I can see how the pommel release button and nut look replaced, but is that a DIY fix or a armory fix? The grips look normal to me, but you all know better. I haven’t taken this apart yet, but I will tonight or tomorrow. Its a ‘43 so doesn’t thst make them the right style grips? So overall it’s a non matching set with different number and year parts. They may have been together as a GI bring back for the last 75 years, I guess we won’t ever know. The seller I bought them from other items looked like he was selling off a hodge podge of different stuff like you’d find at a yard sale.

Frog is nice, same as scabbard is ok, even with some old paints? or something like lager spures?
Bayonet was refiled on pommel most real it was rusted and the surface was filed, reblued note the pits on crossguard and pommel area, the locking nut is not proper, is probably a postwar repair, probably damaged and drilled out,or a replacement, the press button was flatened even when real, should have a slot for removing tool. The grips have a large gaps near pommel, so are not from this piece, all pieces higher as 5000 r i have reported in dbase with wood grips. b.r.Andy

I think my eye is getting better. I like the frog a lot too. I have a similar condition from Andrew. I also like the scabbard but I have a question. I look at the numbers and I think I see numbers under the scrub. Thoughts?

I’ll check that tomorrow, but from the pic I do kinda see a “1” under the 6. I didn’t scrub that like that, it came that way.

There was bad scrubbed over the serials, was enough with oiled cloth remove the dirt, nothing more, it could be scratched behind the number. it doesnt look like a number was removed. 44cof, h range.

Here are the photos of it taken apart. Then cleaned and Re-assembled. The surface rust and the scratching by the numbers on the scabbard cleaned up well. Thanks for all the input. I’m a beginner with collecting these K98’s so all info was really helpful. I’m saving up to buy a German K98 Mauser, so hopefully I’ll pick up some good information on these boards on what to look or lookout for. Thanks again!

Similar cutout on flashguard by germans would be not possible, the origin has a oval or round holes for grip screws, here was 80 assembly number so the bayonet should be similar serialed, the grips are typical red bakelit of late 1943/4 period, not correct on that piece.
