Local BSW Find

Hey all, I've been lame and not bought much of late, but found this '38 BSW in the local wilds along with a sporterized '17 Sauer (Paul, I'll send you SN data on that one if you are reading this). I thought I used my BSW luck on getting my bolt mm '37 on the cheap, but had a little left.

Most of the parts are matching e/4 (b/r, tg and mag assembly, all screws, stock, bands and fittings) The mismatched ones are the rear sight leaf and slider (e359) and the bolt is a matching e/214 BLM.

The only detractions aside from some light carving on the buttstock are the missing band spring and the bubba-improvized solution to said missing band spring. The bayo lug pin was removed and a longer pin stuck in as a retainer and ground.

I'm going to drill this out *carefully* and further disassemble to provide pics of barrel codes and receiver markings. Just wanted to share the first few shots.

Salty, but I love it.

Good too see you back Chris haven't seen you post in awhile! I don't think any K98k collector wouldn't pass up a BSW bolt mismatched rifle. I know I wouldn't, being I like Gustloff and Simson made rifles. Especially Simson made Gew98 rifles.

Plus I think it would be a nice project for you as well. And salty is how I like them. Used but not abused!

Good to be back. I haven't bought a rifle in almost 2 years, so it was my longest hiatus. Truth be told I was buying other militaria, but I made this purchase and bought my buddy's S28 98b restoration and I'm getting the bug again.

The S28 (since he's a much better photographer) http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread.php?t=30184

I have a good amount of e/4 rear sight parts but as fate would have it, none with your serial numbers.

I agree, any BSW is worth picking up, especially a bolt mismatcher. Naturally I too am very fond of Simson - BSW - Gustloff, though earlier the better. A 1938 is especially interesting due to the confused acceptance patterns, mostly on the RR where stick eagles and normal eagles intermingle, the haphazard introduction of the "B" and "C" markings, whose purpose has eluded us so far... Little pattern seems to be present, at least a consistent one, while the normal E/4 typically accompanies the "C", it isn't always the case.

It must be some sort of identifier related to the part, perhaps a sub-contractor or special process, but they sure did not make it an obvious purpose.

Thanks, as always Paul

I have (4) 1938 bSw's. From serial #289 no suffix to 7549 no suffix. #'s 289, 1182 and 1485 are all without the C, but #7549 has it.

Nice one Chris! This is the kind of find that is all the more cool to dig up locally! I would have bought it too in a heartbeat

Thanks man, between this and the untouched g43 I found 5 minutes from me the local wilds still have some gems.
