Looks like a legit SS-conversion to K98k .. regarding the scope base, would need more pictures of it. Obviously it has been disassembled and the stock has been sanded. What is the asking price for the rifle? Or does it belong to you?

I wanted to answer your poll but the correct answer is neither - the serial number 1334 means nothing in relationship to it being either a sniper or prewar, it's simply a serial number applied to the rifle.

Sniper

I like it. Did you take it apart to see the conversion date on it? Really nice from what I can see. Thanks.

Brian

My Mauser K98k

Here are some more pictures of my Mauser hope this helps. I disassembled the Mauser and found no dates on it only Waffenamt numbers or letters, also my Stepfather whom owned the rifle and became my after his passing was not one to tear apart a rifle and re-due the stock. He did use it for hunting a couple of years and may have put something like Tung Oil on for waterproofing but that would be all will send more pictures.

SS/ssr

Almost any SS GEW98 conversion could have been turned into a SSR. Here are 2 known good rifles. There are different variations even to how the base is inletted into the stock. Notice the serial number on the receivers of these 2 guns. The numbers are legible and clearly centered. The serial number on yours is just peeking out from under the mount. Is your mount numbered to the rifle? We have seen several with a death head under what appears to be a cross, which may be significant with respect to a series produced in a certain maker. Mine is earlier that yours by several years. The stock would most assuredly had a death head stamp below the trigger guard on the stock

Every part of this K98k has the same number except the sling that came with it and the spring for the rireing pin. I have not taken the mount off because I did not see a reasion to.Maybe this one was done on a friday!lol Im sending one of the mount that has the number on it. The only marks on the stock are on the interior and there are none under the butt plate. I do not have the scope or cleaning rod.

Ss /ssr

My base is numbered on the rear face as shown in the previous picture, not where you have to remove the base to see it.. I was not suggesting you remove it to find a number. My point is, you can have an all matching SS Gew98 conversion that someone added the mount to afterwards. It would help authenticate the piece to see a matching numbered base. Many reproduction and Swedish mounts have been sold on ebay. This is the hazard of collecting SS sniper rifles. Here is the exact type of mount and scope that would have been issued with your rifle. There were also Hendsolts with SS markings. The pictured scope is in my collection and is a spare. If you are interested let me know. Be warned they are expensive. A Genuine SS sniper rifle can fetch 20-25K Rick

I have to say that it looks pretty convincing, though considering the value some place on authentic examples (and often impostors), the profit potential brings out the very best amongst the unscrupulous in our hobby. This has always been the case, SS, sniper and P08 are all full of misrepresented items that can fool even the knowledgeable.

In this case you have two of the worst fields in one rifle... SS & sniper has to be the worse possible combination. Had the stock not been sanded it might help the authenticity, but still I bet this rifle is worth a good deal regardless of the unknowns.

An inhand inspection is always best , but from what the Pics show . The SS SSR in question is certainly headed in the right direction . In the attached Pic , The Rifle serial number can be seen on the rear of the Scope Base if expanded ,it is just like biggymu`s SS SSR Base . Best Regards

The mounts and bases were hand fit and not always interchangeable, hence the necessity for numbering all the components. As Dave has said, close inspection of one of your first pictures shows the number on the rear of the base. It appears to have the correct bells and whistles save the sanded stock.

SS Short Side Rail

It looks authentic to me from what I can see so far. I like it. Is there a death head still in the grip?

This is a James Julia auction in 2008 that the SS/SSR rifle went for 23K with mismatched scope! Yes!

357A $23,000.00

*SS ISSUED MAUSER 98K SNIPER RIFLE. SN 9105G. Nearly entirely matching with the exception of a replacement extractor which has no number on it. This 1939 SS sniper rifle, with first type short side rail, shows very complete and original with all condition matching with the exception of the scope that shows somewhat better than the rest of the rifle. German sniper rifles as a whole are very expensive and difficult to obtain, with the SS variety being much harder. This example is purported to be one of the better ones in existence according to those who have inspected it. CONDITION: Receiver retains approximately 75% to 80% of the blue with light scattered corrosion and a significantly worn logo. SN and proof marks are still quite present. Bbl assembly shows approximately 60% to 70% of the blue turning plum with the serial number as well as the Waffen SS markings (Deathshead SS2)and Waffenampt proofs. Some light blue touch up is present near the muzzle. Bbl bands show approximately 65% to 70% blue with scattered browning. Triggerguard assembly shows approximately 75% to 80% with the floorplate showing approximately 40% mixed with a grayish brown patina. Hardwood buttstock and handguard, with a deathshead on the pistol grip and the SN of the gun, show good with scattered with light to moderate scuffing present and the numbered flat style buttplate shows good. Short rail scope mount which is numbered to the gun shows 70% to 75% thinning blue with an HW within a Z on the top. SS marked Dienstglas scope shows approximately 90% to 92% rich blue with clear optics. Sling shows dry with some wear. The bore is slightly frosty with a sight protector/muzzle cap present. 4-33132 BK146 (6,000-12,000)

Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day.

Here are a few more stock Markings on mine for your reference.

Here are some more pictures one is showing the rear of the mount with a nice 1334 and another one that shows a little of the second 4 from under the mount. I could not get the mount off without causing more damage than I did by scrating the blueing.

I would like if you could sent me info on the placement of letters and numbers on SSk98k's and the stocks because in two years of research my Mauser I could not find any info on that matter. Thank you
