Does the rifle have a siderail designation (Mod.98)? This rifle falls in a period of transition, before this range Mod.98 are typically present, after hit or miss and increasingly blank. This rifle I had recorded from 2011 but he too didn't show the SR so I assume it is lacking (by late b-block they are consistently blank). Between the two posts (2011 and here) I have almost every detail but the SR. The barrel is “Sütterlin S” 41 D49454 e/37 x3 and the rifle is proper in every way so far as the pictures go.

Congratulations stewey and welcome to the JP Sauer club

Do we know the reason why the siderail is blank for b-block?

Thanks on the SR detail.

BSR (blank siderail) is not only b-block related, generally 1935- early 1936 as well as much of 1941. BSR is regularly found from the first block of 1941 through the g-block of 1941, earlier and sporadically this can vary (intermingle) within those ranges and after the g-block. But by the k-block BSR is rare if at all...

Trends do not suggest this is related to the simplification program of 1941, too early, probably something related to Walther manufacture.

Thank you Loewe for the details. I guess it is hard to come up with explanations of minor variations even when archives are available. As a side question, are there archives of Carl Walther that have survived to this day ? And if so, has anyone researched them and published a monography on the company ? They have been involved in the design and manufacturing of so many arms or parts thereof.
