Odd bayonet frog

This frog came on a 1939 Coppel bayonet. I haven’t seen one like it before. Appears to be some type of rubberized material? In rough shape overall with some
Of the stitching coming undone. Anyone know what this is? Is it safe to gently clean with a little warm, soapy water?

It looks like a KS98 (dress bayonet ) frog. Some of them were made from patent leather. Over the years the leather dries up and and ( for the lack of a better term) wrinkles. It can remain some what flexible or just get hard as a rock. I would just leave it alone as far a s cleaning it. Do not put water on it, water can be absorbed and can cause mold. If you must wipe it off take care, the edges of the leather where it has cracked can be snagged and torn. Check out the section in the WW2 German Militaria sub forum , Caring for your WW 2 Memorabilia. There is a leather care link.

Same opinion, dress for KS98, its smaller as S84/98, even the leather would be not shrunk. b.r.Andy
