Here is the first of a pair of Oberndorf’s that I am going to post photos of today. This is a nice honest carried example that looks pretty good for a rifle that saw the whole war as a heer issue. There are a couple things that are not matching but I don’t find it a huge deal. First is the hand guard. It seems to match the stock well, I took several over all photos of the hand guard and stock and the lines. Please comment if you have one on that aspect of the rifle. The inside serial number on the current hand guard is scrubbed. The other non matching issue is the front trigger guard screw. The rifle came with an unmarked later war screw and the associated locking screw is unmarked as well and should have a e/63 waff…. The rear trigger guard screw is original as well as the rear locking screw. At any rate I am still happy to own this prewar K98. One other side note to this rifle. I watched a good friend of mine buy it this year at SOS in the hallway during the line up before they let everyone threw the doors. I was hoping he wasn’t going to buy it and I would get my chance, but in the end it worked out😎…He came over yesterday to check a couple other of my rifles out brought this rifle and it ended up staying!. I also watched my friend buy an awesome SS helmet from the same guy that had this rifle as well. It was really neat to witness. As always please let me know if you want to see something that I missed. I will provide…..

Really nice Oberndorf Jory! I also really like rifles in this condition. Well used, but not totally beat to death. Lots of stories to tell.

That is a very handsome rifle. I am looking for one as well.

The hand guard is a fine match in color and length (as not to protrude forward). I wonder how many hand guards were crack and broken due to using the rifle to carry something heavy like an ammunition can over the shoulder. Also, the wear patterns to the metal around the ammunition ramp suggest it was fed lots of ammunition.

I am include a photo of my 42 1939 where it appears a deliberate notch was placed there, maybe for the purposes of carrying something .

Wonderful addition, congratulations.

That is a beautiful, honest rifle, congrats. Just imagine the stories this one could tell. I really like the walnut stock on this one and the handguard matches nicely for not being the original. A 1938 S/42 in walnut like yours is my ideal pre war K98k that I've been looking for, hopefully one day...

Get in line, I was looking for one first!
