I was setting up a table at the Dallas show today with full intentions of just cleaning some of my stuff out... Then this WGL stock caught my eye, for a few seconds I tried to say no, but for eight bills I couldn’t bring myself to be that dumb. It’s got a couple issues, varnished overall and there’s a chip out of the stock behind the tang, but overall not bad. The metal is very nice, can’t wait to see what it looks like not covered in varnish, I’ll take better or at least more pictures when that’s done haha. Maybe the most interesting thing to me is that it has a WGL stock but RGL handguard, maybe that’s fairly common but I don’t recall seeing that much if ever this early on. It was a good day, there were at least a couple other forum members there, luckily I picked this one up just in time, hopefully it’s a sign of a good show if anyone’s thinking of making it out tomorrow.

Looks nice, you can’t pass that up at $800. Just do a gentle strip, I’d probably just leave it alone.

Add a picture contrasting the handguard and stock if you have the opportunity. This combination happened although I would not call it common. Nice purchase. you would not have any trouble flipping it for a profit. Thanks for posting it here.

Thanks fellas! I’m just taking the varnish off the metal for now, it’s not too thick on the stock, in some areas almost none so I may end up leaving it. I’ll grab pictures of more details such as the HG and the funny area of compressed laminate blank in front of the recoil lug later.

Flynakeds secret is a lucky horseshoe in his keister.....

I haven't seen it in hand yet, but it looks like a beauty...I would've been there setting up, but I am headed to Bermuda tomorrow, so Clay is taking my table for this one so I don't lose it (It's a great spot!)

I say keep it, how often do you run into a nice, all matching 98k for $800 anymore? Even if it one of the most common ones out there, it looks like a real beauty!

Try not to sell it before I get back...so I can se it!

Let me at it, I'll get that varnish off! I am the Stripper King!

I will tackle that Peruvian when I get home, me thinks...took it all apart last night, but it will have to wait until I get back for anything further....

Nice score!!! I kind of agree with Mike, although I hate anything on a stock, this does not look bad. You may make it look worse working on it. I’d probably leave one as lightly touched as this. Different material handguard may not be common but it did happen.

Wow! Boy did you step in it. And that was his price?? No beating him down or haggling? This is a range we see lots of junk sold for on GB and other online auctions. Great score!

Nice c block Clay! I bet it cleans up easily. I think I have a couple wgl stocks with rgl hand guards. The a block I just received is that way. It's not that common but not exactly unusual either.

Thanks guys! I only offered him $50 less than his asking price, and only because I am a broke mechanic  Here are some pictures with the varnish removed from the metal. But I did not touch the stock at all. The chip is pretty bad behind the tang actually, I half considered fixing it but I think I’ll just leave it too.

The funny lamination area forward of the recoil lug is interesting, appears to have been a weird density issue or swelling in the blank before it was cut or something giving it that odd appearance. Of note also, the barrel is rather plum!

That is actually even nicer than I first thought! Minty fresh. I know there are already 2 c block rifles in the stickies but this one is worthy too IMHO!

My apologies guys, where are my manors, here are more details. Also some massive eagles for y’all haha. Pretty standard fair, FN bolt not a lot under the wood line. Perhaps the most interesting point, it has what appear to be two hammer marks on the right receiver bridge (no they aren’t filled holes) the corresponding internals are “proud” and have worn through the bluing, almost as if the broach cut was out of spec and they attempted to “tighten” this dimension?? There are no re-inspections though if this was the case, might just as easily be marks from some kind of tooling when the receiver was clamped, the bluing is perfect at this point so definitely not a post production item. Almost seems like how Finnish M39 receivers were “tightened” at the split rear receiver?? Just guessing.
