Mauser 1939

I came across a 42 1939 rifle with what appears to be rack numbers on the stock. I couldn't find anything that would explain the significance of these marking. I'd be interested to know where they may have originated.
Thank you!1000005848.jpg1000005845.jpg1000005842.jpg

I never saw anything quite like this. The rifle would not have had a cupped buttplate when it was originally made, so someone replaced it whether depot or a postwar user. Any other information?

Most likely rack marks of some kind, but almost certainly not German. I've seen similar stuff on a huge variety of military rifles of many eras over the years, but never seen anything like that in German service.

Any idea about the rifle or where it was used? Stock looks a bit rough, is this one of the recent Ethiopian imports?

The rifle is available for sale locally and the LGS has no background information about the history. I'll be checking it out on Saturday. Allegedly there are no import marks. The stock is pretty rough but what got me interested is the rack numbers on the stock and that they asking about $650 out the door.

Do you have literally any other pictures or information? Receiver markings? Straight bolt or turned down? Condition?

Right now what you're describing could be a screamer of a deal where you need to run to that store now before someone else gets it, or an utter rip off.

Or anywhere in between.

Reminds me of these marked sks rifles used by PLO and captured by Israelis

Are there any markings on the receiver or the barrel that I should look out for that would indicate where it went after WW2?
