S/42G opinions.

Will someone bother to send the images to RIA and make them aware? Also, please post the link, now that it is outed as fake. I really wonder on the description.

I also sent in a email yesterday. Good that Bruce also did.

one would think that for a Premier Auction held three times a year, from a house like RIA, they would actually pay closer attention to this sort of thing and protect their name and reputation...
That said, with in-person viewing, a buyer could pick that up. Its how few photos they post that really bothers me. Some GB posts have over a hundred. RIA... 3-4. for a Premier Auction.

I wonder if they will cancel that auction; change the description to renumbered and repost the auction; or send back the renumbered rifle to the seller and say go pound sand.

It’s a shitty situation no matter how you look at it. Might even be talked about for a long time.

Will be interesting to see if honesty and integrity actually exists at RIA and how they handle the situation as it’s douche baggery and humping being passed off as a top dollar legit K98 when it’s not, which means can you actually trust them in the future with their knowledge (or lack of), appraisals and opinions?

Considering the hammer price of some of the items they sell at the Premier Event, they can 't afford such a stain on their name.

Please, RIA doesn't care. This isn't the first bad item they've had slip though, and it won't be the last. They're a known name among the doctor/lawyer/well to do computer toucher set (and yes, they do have some very unique stuff that any collector would want, I'm not saying they're all BS) and their reputation is going to be fine no matter how much a bunch of rifle nerds on message boards might spot bad stuff from time to time.

since we are on the subject, what do you all think of this item: item 413, same auction.

Story aside.

Based on those pictures I can confidently say that it is (probably) a K98k rifle with a bayo, scabbard, and sling. The listing claims it is a BYF42 but I see no proof of that.

It comes with a letter written in 1992 by someone I have never heard of who relates a story he claims to have heard about the rifle.

Yes that is a cynical as hell take and maybe it's as honest a vet bringback as you'll ever see, but the saying is "buy the rifle, not the story" for a reason.

edit: this is one of my huge problems with RIA. For such a "high end" auction house their pictures SUCK and frequently leave you more in the dark about what you're bidding on than the worst GB listings.

I dont need to pay a 28% premium to find a turd, gunbroker is only hitting me for 6% when I step into their Port-o-LET. Satisfaction Guaranteed

Of course they don’t care, why would they?
Remember, It’s all about the almighty dollar.

That’s why we have this great k98 forum, to discuss and scrutinize the turds that float by.

I have an occupation GP-35, holster, and two mags that was from a vet local to me. Maybe I should shite out a 3 paragraph essay about how he personally took it from a dead SS guy and then I can tack on +$3k when I sell it. Since a “he said she said” is just as good as Army bring back papers apparently.

Possible to do a records check via a PI but it would be a bit of a long shot imo. Nice looking rifle tho and hopefully it's accurately described. 7,500 to 10,000 tho is.....steep to say the least.

IMO no change to auction.
I would be surprised if they do anything to adjust the description or pull item.
I will update this post if I hear anything from them.

I see the description has been adjusted to say: "The bolt has been renumbered to match.". The estimated hammer price has not been changed, nor has the rest of the description, except for this...: "Provenance: The Bruce Karem Collection; Private Collection." Bruce, I hope they cleared that statement with you first.

Well at least they acknowledge its a force matched bolt now. Better than passing it off as a perfect example.

I had submitted a question too, providing them a link to this thread here so they could look at the pictures posted themselves. This was the reply that I got (which must have happened at the same time the description was correctened):
Good Afternoon! Thank you for this information, We have submitted a correction to the description. -Melissa Roelens-CSR-III

Maybe getting an item outed in public with pictorial evidence put enough pressure on them to make this correction. The added provenance of Bruce Karem collection is pretty hilarious though. Almost now sounds as if @bruce98k did the force match.

Nice that they updated the description, but if I didn’t know and looked up the name and saw the books, I would feel like it has more value to it. And renumbered to match could mean a lot of things besides faked to a casual buyer. Still not an honest description.
