1915 Danzig 8441 a Gew98

I picked this rifle up off an action. It’s a really nice battle rifle that had not been apart in quite some time. It came with some extras, a nice dust cover, the front sight of the night sight system but unfortunately missing the back piece and a Weimar era naval sling…… It’s all matching minus a couple things…. The firing pin is waffed but unnumbered, the safety is over stamped matched and the bolt body is a possible over stamped? And of course the cleaning rod is not matched. Overall a really nice example I think…. All thoughts are welcome and I am looking for a loose back piece to make the night sights complete….

That's a great one Jory! Glad you ended up taking it. I know the unplanned purchases are always some of the most fun lol.

The bolt is overstamped for sure. You can see the old remnants of the serial number if you look closely.

Very cool Danzig! Congrats on picking it up Jory. The accessory's are icing on the cake, including the unnumbered but waffenampt marked firing pin.

So you did end up winning that auction, what a great score!!!

This is as classic as they come. Untouched rifles are their own gem. Depot work is always neat to see. The Weimar navy sling is a nice little bonus, not to mention the OG cover.

Congrats on snagging a nice Danzig with a bunch of cool accessories. A really neat find with some depot work to boot. I must have missed this auction, seems like a bunch of cool Gewehr 98s are coming out of the woodwork now.

That’s an excellent Bavarian rework, Jory! They were so good at steaming and re-striking the stocks that these basically masquerade factory Prussian pieces. We’ve probably misidentified scores of these over the years. I have one follows the pattern of yours.

Great Bavarian rebuild! A few of these have popped up lately, it's fascinating to see. Since there is no marking on the buttplate itself i'm thinking this was done by Amberg.

I know we've had a number posted but just for everyone's benefit, here is what we are seeing to identify this is Bavarian:

1) lion proofed rebarrel (This one wasn't well struck so kind of hard to see but it's unmistakable)
IMG_7432.jpeg

2) Overstamped wrist- This indicated re-acceptance after the work was done

3) Scrubbed/renumbered bolt body. This is not enough itself (other facilities did this too), but in conjunction with the other two features I noted, this also falls into line.

Finally, as Cyrus noted; the lack of buttplate depot marking is very typical Bavarian.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys….. I appreciate them. Also thanks for the rework lesson a well. I figured it had been reworked somewhere along the way, but when I didn’t find a butt plate mark I was not sure on the circumstances……. I had little doubt that I would be enlightened….. Turned out to be a cool rifle and it was good that I got a shove in the back to bid a little on it😎

Always happy to provide that shove!

Very neat Bavarian rebuild Gew98 Jory. I'll check my display cabinet. I may have a spare rear nightsight for you. Also, a neat photograph for your thread too.

Awesome picture J; damn nice (and interesting) OP rifle, - Amberg or Bavaria (Ingolstadt) was a major reworker of rifles during the war, dozens are known and most are extensive in nature (real builds not just patchwork jobs)
