Found this AR44 that had been sporterized late last week at a LGS near me. The stock was not original, but what was on it would be something else if it was intact! The front sight was replaced with a bead sight. The rear sight was removed, and the base was left. The only front band is unnumbered. The matching bolt had its blueing removed, and the safety switch is not original but was modified. The trigger guard is marked byf and so is the floor plate (which is mismatched). Probably the biggest drawback to this rifle is the peep sight mounted on the rear tang (which was drilled).
Barrel numbers are: shield 44 D6 45 eagle/35
I happen to love restoring K98k sporters, so I bought this and brought it home. I know that some of you wouldn’t touch a restoration with a hole drilled up top, but I couldn’t resist.
I spent the weekend restoring a Yugo captured stock with raw linseed oil. I’m open to your suggestions on how to best reblue the bolt and how to fill the peep sight hole.
Anyways, let me know your thoughts!
