Extremely early S84/98 III – transitional “Nullserie” hybrid with wooden grips and marked push-button (“418”)

Hello everyone,

I would like to share a very unusual S84/98 III bayonet from my collection and ask for your expert opinions.

  • Serial number: 147 (very low)
  • Blade: unmarked, no manufacturer code, no date
  • Grips: wooden, without drainage hole (typical for the very early Nullserie)
  • Crossguard: push-button release is not the early plain type, but instead has a later-style recessed cut, and is also marked “418” (Coppel GmbH / Alcoso Solingen).
  • Scabbard: no markings, no serials.

So far, I have never seen another example combining all these features:

  • Nullserie configuration (wood grips, no drain hole, no markings)
  • But with a later experimental push-button system, factory-marked.

This looks like a true transitional hybrid, possibly a test piece produced between the Nullserie and the first small production runs.

📌 My questions:

  1. Has anyone seen another example of such a hybrid?
  2. Do you know how many of these are known worldwide?
  3. Would this be considered even rarer than the standard Nullserie?

I will attach detailed photos of the bayonet, the grips, and especially the push-button with “418” marking.

Any insights from the experts here would be very much appreciated!

Best regards,
Tymon Łukasik.

This is not a null serie its a export piece to Spain mostly in period of SCW so around post 1937 prior to end of 1939, the serialing 147 was added by spanish, typical this bayonet was wout serialing. The grips are replacements when not with cleaning hole, is there a flashguard on handle? as many were reported wout it. Push button locking lug is normal, assembly serialed 418 is under grips on tang.
The lower ricasso is marked o in script which is reported to Spain. Most real its a Hoerster production. j.Maddox in his book it wrongly destined as Ostmark but normally the piece is from Solingen as tang area under grips are obviously marked WaA253 which was striked out, so assembled mostly from not accepted army production.

Ohh I see, yes, there is no flashguard. So how much could I realistically sell it for?

The spanish contracts are similar to portugal Mo937 a lowcost bayonets, certainly under 150€ probably.
