    Prefered Years for the k98

I'd say one of the original mauser manufacturers are probably more collectible given their obvious attention to quality. Like anything 1942 and earlier from Oberndorf am Neckar or Borsigwalde. I'm not as much a fan of the later war models.

What was everyone's very first k98k?

I just began collecting in 2016 with an AR 1941 RC.

    BYF43 info?

West german rework eh. Good to know. Thanks so much, you guys are a wealth of knowledge on the subject matter. And no, the rifle has no import markings. But all rifles imported into Canada, even today, are not required to be inscribed with import marks like they are in the US.

    BYF43 info?

Any thoughts on whether or not this is an East German rework?

Inherited a German used Star B and it sat in the safe for two years and didnt know it

I have one just like the one on the first page, but probably not as good shape. The Ñ marking just above the trigger indicates it was made in 1943. During ww2 the German high command didn't see the need to waffenmark these imported pistols. Apparently they were used for police, supply and rear...

    BYF43 info?

Attached are pics of a recent acquisition. Does anyone know if the Russians electro-penciled the safety like in the pic below? What other info can you share about the rifle in general? Thanks in advance.

    Soldbuch - 51 year old

What i love about soldbuch's is they track everything about that particular soldier.

Probably the single nicest 1940 42 code Luftwaffe 98k out there.

And how and where did he get a hold of the rifle? Did he disarm a German soldier, find it in the field etc? Knowing all these details makes the rifle that much more collectible and attractive. If you don't mind sharing that is.

BNZ 44 - an SS contract?

The trigger, floorplate, bolt, bands, etc are all quality non-matching milled parts. No electropenciling. The wood has not been scrubbed, and has no SNs. There are no import marks (but I’ve never seen import marks on any K98 here in Canada, I think that's a US thing). The bolt is smooth like...

BNZ 44 - an SS contract?

The underside of the bolt handle is checkered. Also the underside of the bolt handle has some imperial stamps I believe. The first pic is a stamp on the right side of the barrel. There are only two swastikas, one on the stock behind the bolt takedown disk, and the left side of the barrel but...

    ZF41 scoped rifle

Thanks, interesting. I hadn't thought of that. I know it was a Canadian vet bring back as I got it from the family member of the vet after he passed.

BNZ 44 - an SS contract?

So I understand there were two dates stamped on the Steyr receiver in 1944, the "4" and "44". From what I've read the 44 were apparently the last of an SS contract. Is my rifle below a possible ss rifle? Not sure what to look for since I'm new to this. Thanks

    ZF41 scoped rifle

Thanks for the welcome and info gunkraut. So, normally the mount's SN should match the rifle, but not the scope's SN? Also, it's a bit hard to see from the photos, but in the full rifle pic (just under the scope rail) someone carved their initials into the wood "AK". The carving marks appear...

    ZF41 scoped rifle

I picked up this rifle with a scope, and wanted to get the thoughts of those who know more about these. The rifle appears to have two sets of SNs. The entire bolt assembly matches itself, and the rifle has another set of SNs all matching. However, the scope SN does not match the rifle. Is this...

    VERY Interesting Sniper Photo !!!!!

I agree with the scope being offset to the left of the shooter. Also, i think that's not a vz.24 but rather a vz.33.
