Does anyone else hunt with theirs?

Hello, new member here, I fixed up a mismatched, duffel cut, abused bring back G43 and hunt with it. Mostly coyote, which are getting out of hand in my region and are an open season species. I’ve gotten seven so far and clipped a grouse with a careful neck shot. I’m using a shooters kit and 175 grain hand loads. I’ve not taken it after deer yet, the magazine capacity is too high for deer hunting in MI, I’ve built a plug/limiter, but would hate to lose my rifle to a warden that didn’t accept this fix.

My G43 was also an abused hunting rifle bring back. I would probably try to buy something else like an Ar10 or an M1a and put the G43 away. Way too valuable for what you are doing

That’s true, I could spend $1500-2000 on a new rifle(not really) OR use what I have. This rifle was in an abandoned trailer for decades, rusting away. It was bound for the dumpster but the new owner knew I liked weird old guns. I’d imagine if this rifle stood up to combat in WW2, it can make a few trips afield at 1-2 shots per trip.

Absolutely, Logan. With the shooter's kit you've got no worries. It's not like you're burning through 100-200 rounds at the range.

I think it's really cool that you're unleashing that old girl on predators!

No, mine are all collectible. AR-15’s are pretty cheap still, maybe get one of those and flip those coyotes with a .223.

Is there any way I can get the serial number, maker code and whether it’s a K.43 or G.43 on yours? I have an extensive serial number data base on these. If you don’t feel comfortable giving that out, I totally understand.

Thanks, Kelly

Eh depends, I have a beat up M1 Garand I took deer hunting but that's it. Anything that is in really good condition or matching numbers I avoid. If your rifle is a rescue and doesn't hold a ton of collector value it should be fine to take out especially if the stock is a reproduction. The metal parts are more durable than people give them credit for.

I had an IHC Special that had a brand new .308 barrel, I sold it some time ago as I preferred having an M1 in .30-06, and I dropped the barreled receiver on a tile by accident. It hit right at the back of the receiver onto the tile. Needless the say the tile was not okay but the barreled receiver looked fine. Not scratches, dents absolutely nothing.

What is the hunting capacity where you are? 5 round limit? There are PLENTY of 5 round chopped original mags out there. Let me know if you need help looking. I see them all of the time.

Nice work with that! We have a 3-round magazine limit for deer in Ohio. They used to require a 3-round magazine plug, but when they opened up deer to straight wall rifle cartridges a few years ago they eliminated the plug requirement, but still only allow three rounds in the rifle or shotgun.

Nice work saving it. I don't hunt with mine but shoot vintage sniper matches. Did you get new springs also? Now you need a ZF4 scope and mount (reproductions are available) This one is an orig. IMG_2699.jpg

Take one of these mags, and silver-solder a chunk of round stock to the follower. Bingo -- 4-shot magazine. Even the most jerked-off game warden couldn't argue with THAT!

Hinting

I don't think I'd be worried about hunting with my rifles as long as they were in safe condition to do so.

I assumed we were in a general consensus that no G43 should ever be shot unless it truly was a mix master. Even then with new springs a shooters kit and law load ammunition

Every one of mine has been gone through with a fine tooth comb and all parts are up to snuff. I shoot them all and never worry. One of my best shooters is an all matching except for the repro stock. With the gas tuned down the wear and tear is minimal and like I said you have to have gone through the parts and know what you have, even better. I agree if you just took one out and started blasting with one that wasn't gone through meticulously you may have problems. I dont encourage anyone to go blasting with an all matching collector rifle but if someone wants to do that, its their gun. I truly believe that most of the cracks and breaks were done post war.

I mean a person can do whatever they want with there material possession. Its not like anyone is posting Bubba-ized porn or asking how to tap for a scope.

And the forum certainly doesn't all decided on one thing or another. Pretty sure that smells like Group Think.

Certainly no difference shooting at paper or living things, doesn't seem like OP is treaking though the back country.

You got that right. Otto, don't ever worry about the "general consensus", not here or anywhere else. Me, I shoot, drive and ride everything I own. Nobody gave me this stuff, I worked for every dollar that it took to buy it. It's MINE, at least until I go Home.

After that, I couldn't give a rat's rear what anyone does with it. If the next guy doesn't like the extra ding or scratch that I added, it's their problem -- not mine.

Isn't there a hunting forum somewhere that people can post their pictures of dead animals on?

You know, I think I’m barking up the wrong tree here. I appreciate the friendly responses, but I’m not here to stir the pot or offend, or to have to defend my actions. I’ll leave you guys to your forum.

No Sir, you are fine. This forum is open to everyone and you are welcome just the same as the next guy.
