1908 DWM Koblenz Rework

Hi All,

Got this one through a friend recently. The rifle itself is a DWM 1908 that passed through Koblenz (#5) at some point. The bolt is a replacement and scrubbed/renumbered at the depot.

Not much more to say other than it's a pretty solid rifle and in good shape. Nice sling too.

Awesome DWM Chris. Love the c/O acceptance on the wrist, just like an S28.

The K. on the receiver and buttplate is interesting. Pre-serial number assembly markings perhaps?

Great rifle and a real help on BC and RR patterns! Still a little befuddled on the fraktur acceptance on RR, - I long ago assigned C/O on the RR 3rd position (and BC) based upon the wrist C/O that is commonly found, granted it is a poor basis as they are unrelated and not too similar in application, but my fraktur charts don't offer many alternatives and maker association is better than no association at all...

My association of DWM (actually Oberspree to the S28) to S28 was based upon a number of things, mostly Oberspree 1917-1918 patterns, which also are found on Oberspree 1918 patterns. Most 1st block DWM/18's are actually Oberspree assembled rifles and follow Oberspree/18 acceptance (second two barrel mating positions). There are a number of other considerations involved, the small almost indecipherable mark in the center of the receiver (this is almost always present and above the marker), the RS base acceptance, the almost universal 1920 property mark on DWM 1918/Oberspree assembles, often the presence of E/29 & E/14 etc... waffenamts that I have associated with pre-NS Berlin (probably DWM or Obserpree) .

Anyway, DWM/18 do exist in some numbers first block through e-blocks, but almost all first block (no suffic DWM/18 are actually Oberspree and all have S28 characteristics. I attribute most DWM/18 no blocks, many WOK/17 no suffix, all Oberpree no suffix 1918's, all 1919 Oberspree's to the origins to the S28 program.

**This is a bit convoluted because I am pressed for time and unrelated to this rifle, but in short C/O is a Oberspree related, nothing to do with DWM in late 1918 production, you will not find a C/O on any wartime DWM production. Some pre-war, but I am sure this is a different inspector than the one encountered with postwar Oberspree-S28 variants (even actual WOK & Oberspree assembled 1917's and 1918's do not carry this C/O acceptance..)

*** The real connector of S28 to Oberspree are the two Oberspree 1919's known, they fully developed the connection, and the other associations came from their features.
 
Great looking rifle Chris. Is the sling the early type with the sewn on H buckle, or the later type with the football stud? I am guessing the former since the rear swivel is fastened with a stud and not sewn on.
