1910 Danzig K98a warhorse

This one is a very used, been there warhorse. I pulled it out last week & found some pics, found a lot more this morning. Originally regimental marked to a Garde Train unit (G.T.F.3.19), on the buttplate, the muzzle cover is unit marked 3.87, with an original sling unit marked on the frosch button 3.67. The sling is still supple, no cracks with a period sewn repair from a cut on it's side. I'd forgot till seeing the other pics that it had a nice repaired duffle cut. Mainly a Gew98 collector, I've had 2 K98a's, one sold last week. This one can go to a new caretaker. If it trips your trigger, pm me.
I forgot to add, it's of course all matching...

Mike, if the rifle is handy snap a shot of the RR, might have it on the trends computer, but not sure until tomorrow. If you captured the BC that would be nice too, though don't go through the trouble to get it. I figure you had it apart you may have got the BC, but secondary to the RR.... I will trend this tomorrow and will know if I had a record of this.

If Mike doesn’t have those photos. I will gladly supply, when rifle is hand.

I don’t recognize the acronyms though. What’s “RR” and “BC”.

Bolt carrier? “RR” has me stumped.

It can be a bit confusing from time to time, i also have a note sheet with the abbreviations lol!
so RR is right receiver, this is where inspectors stamps are.
BC is Barrel Code this is the supplier and other information.

Excellent! Much appreciated! I’ll be sure to add, said photos, when in hand. If Mike doesn’t have them already.

Rutche is correct of course, though in this instance, after checking trends (database) I noted that I have the RR already and falls in line with surrounding rifles... Only the BC and lower acceptance under the stock serial is unknown. Neither are critical to my research as I have recorded others around this rifles range and generally there is some consistency pre-war, even with Danzig.

Generally changes start sporadically and build consistency in narrow ranges, that or it piddles out quickly, like some inspector takes a vacation our a temporary assignment.

It would be good to see whatever catches your eye upon arrival, - you are lucky to snag this rifle!

Alright, alright, thanks for everyone’s patience! I had this rifle, in hand, less than a week after Mike and I made a deal. Mike (Feldmutze) was excellent to deal with!

It took me a while to clean it all up.

Some thoughts/verdict:

•All matching, heavily used condition

•Had a fair amount of active rust on the front of the barrel area, floor-plate/trigger area.

•Bore is dark and evenly pitted, strong rifling. Would be a great shooter still, imo.

•Duffle cut was well thought out, and repaired. They nicked the barrel, underneath the rear barrel band. I imagine while they were lining up the cut.

•Rear tang screw, was extremely tight. Had to use penetrating oil, freezing the rifle, along with a socket screwdriver.

•The top hand-guard was cut into two pieces. The rear part (rear sight section) is matching. The front part, is from another piece of wood/rifle. The only marking is an “R” and some “scribble”. Any idea what rifle this may of come from? I would think the original front section was broken/lost over time.

•Could anyone help ID the unit marks:
*Butt-plate “G.T.F.3.19” “F” could be an “E”
*Muzzle cover “3.87”
*Sling “3.67”

Thanks for any thoughts,
-Danny

P.S. Mike enjoyed finding your ownership “tag” underneath the butt-plate, haha.

Your correct that Mike was excellent to deal with. I ended up with 2 really great rifles from him. Nice K98a

Danny, maybe Jeff Noll or some of our knowledgeable European collectors can help on the unit marking. It's Garde Train but unsure on the "F" or "E".

On the tag, I faintly remember doing that on a few rifles 15-20 years ago. What's on it, my name & a date?

It was your name, address and date (2006).

Interesting too, the paper was pretty faded. Even being protected, under the butt-plate for all that time. I got a good laugh out of it.
