Hi everyone. Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year to all.
I have a 1941 dated Sporter Mauser posted elsewhere here. The caliber is 8X57 NORM. Is this good old 8mm Mauser? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it is the .318 bore or J bore, referred to back in the day as the normal (ergo NORM) caliber. If I am correct, and I think I am, under no circumstances should you fire 8x57 JS (.323) bore in that rifle. If you have a copy of Ludwig Olsons "Mauser Bolt Rifles", refer to page 235 for more information. As a further precaution, you can always slug the barrel.

Make sure it really is "NORM" and not "NORMA". Norma is an ammunition plant, they also have own calibers like the .308 Norma Magnum. I do not know if this also applies to the 8x57IS, but just to warn you.
