98K Recoil Lug disassembly tool?

Hi, folks,
I'm restoring a "sporterized" 98K that had been all matching and minty before Bubba got it in the 50's, as a guess.
I'm stuck right now because the recoil lug is reversed in the original stock. The finish is minty and I am looking for
a correct tool to remove it without damaging the finish. Does anyone know of a source for a reasonably-priced lug
disassembly tool? Thanks very much in advance!

... wheeler makes a really nice gunsmith set of tools. i have a set that works great and,,.. has the tool for removing recoil lugs. they have large and small sets with a good variety. also;;.. the proper tools to remove screws work better than standard screw drivers,.......... check ebay,,.. etc.

I've got a T handle type one I've used on 3 rifles to good effect. You just have to be careful to not damage the wood. I'm unlikely to need it in the next little while... If you want to send me a PM we might be able to work something out.

they have been scarce of late, but “brass stacker” currently has them in stock @ $13. theirs is ‘socket like’, a hex plug w/2 pins that fits in a 1/2”x1/4” socket. Use a T handle, and 3-4 layers of masking tape w/hole centered over the nut. It’s all too easy for the pins to gouge the stock, DAMHIKT !

tgrenterprises.com , milsurp rifle accessories.

On the plus side, if your lug is reversed, it has been removed & turned around previously, so the nut is probably “unpeened”, making removal somewhat easier. If you think you’ll need it again (to keep nuts tight) buy one, or borrow OldColt’s, he’s a good guy!

I have the same one. I ended up CAREFULLY filing down the "prongs" to be a smaller diameter, as some of my recoil lug holes are a bit too small for the original tool's prong thickness. Works great unless your recoil lug is set back.

Hi, folks,
Many thanks for all your help! OldColt, thanks for your kindness, but shipping has gotten so high
that I might as well just buy one. I can always use it to help other friends who have milsurps in the
future! :)

I ordered the tool mentioned above, and will be delighted when I can get this detail attended to.
The cautionary tips for avoiding damage are much appreciated! The rest of the original, correct
parts are on hand, so it should go together quickly, now!
Thanks again,
John
