Ajack SS Dienstglas on HWZ SSR rig

Recently purchased this rig, thought it might be good to post it for reference. Markings were filled with a crayon to make them better visible. The SS Dienstglas engraving was almost fully removed, still traces readable. Other than that pretty nice.

I forgot to add - rust traces on ocular and objective housing suggest it has had leather caps for a long time.

The stamp in the dovetail on bottom I remember sometimes being associated with Rheinmetall - did anyone else encounter this stamp so far on a HWZ/Weihrauch marked SSR mount? I currently can only recall it from later SSR mounts, but not of the SS.

I think your points are correct.. It is important to view original items the markings alone and how this mount is marked is textbook and stunning... Congrats !!

My SS SSR mount has the “Rheinmetall” mark also. The Dienstglas is 39146, not far away.
It was the only one I had seen with the mark until your example. Also HWZ.

How late (using Ajack serial numbers) might this place the scope manufacture, if known? I realize the conversion date on the rifle is of little help determining when it was made into a sniper. You have a lot of knowledge in this area.

These should date around 1942/1943 somewhere. Your rifle does have a firing proof for the Gew98 to K98k conversion, but also the second stamp for when the bolt handle has been turned down.

Nice original SS Scope & Mount , it is a shame the markings were defaced/scrubbed , but still a nice example .
Thanks for sharing it .

15 scopes away from mine. Incredible.
Rifle serial is 2478 away.
Took me until your post to compare the serials .. indeed, super close to each other! Makes me wonder if maybe the scope came already in the mount and with the base to be then mounted to a rifle. The rifle serial I wouldn't bother too much upon, I don't think they were set up consecutively (when thinking about this .. is there anything known whether the SS when doing the Gew98 to K98k rifle conversions maintained the original rifle serial, or if they assigned a new rifle serial?), since I would think they'd be picking the rifles that shoot better. About the only ones I know of ever having set up sniper rifles with consecutive serialized rifle serials are the Italians in WWI. Even the US did have the Warner & Swasey scopes in certain serial blocks, but they would not do the whole block, just those that shoot better.

Unfortunately it is quite often to find the markings scrubbed over here. I suppose post WWII not many wanted to be caught with SS marked items.

There are a few Gustloff LSR that are known with consecutive serial numbers , I had a consecutive set at one time # 93080 with matching mount and #93081 with mm mount #93181 There is another member who also has a consecutive set of Gustloff LSR Rifle

You're right. With LSR you can encounter consecutive serials. But that was more due to the fact they had "sniper receivers from factory", so were supposed to be sniper rifles anyway. Therefore a bit similar to the Italian concept.
