Century Import K98 ?

Can someone point me to the history and background of the Century K98 imports with CAI barrel marking?

Were these a mix of original issue and Russian captures?
We're the rifles kept in their historical condition as imported or were they reworked any in Europe or by Century when they got to the US.

Thanks

This S/42 1936 RC I just bought is a CAI import. Still had Russian grease hiding when I took off the stock. Don't know when it was imported.

Ive got some Century guns that supposedly came from Romania or somewhere else in the Balkans back in the 90's

So far as I know, Century themselves did not do any disassembly or part swapping. I saw Century guns fresh off the delivery truck in the early 90's or late 80's that were clearly right out of storage. Some of them were caked in cosmoline. At the time I purchased several Century imported guns and examined many more, and it seemed to me they were just as found.

I concur. I have owned a great many K98 rifles with that import mark and they ALL appeared "as found" and not messed with. They simply imported them and sold them.

Same here. Bought a BYF 44 stamped CAI back in mid-90s. Total mix-matcher but only paid $260. I believed it could be Romanian capture because eagle and swastika's remained unpeened. Not much of a finish on stock at all. Cosmoline or oil from every nook and cranny on a hot day.

Could have been Yugo, Romanian captures were FAMOUS for defacing any swastika proofs. They left Weimar droop eagles alone but were aggressive as hell on any swastika. I have had one or two Romy captures in the past and if memory serves, came with the CIA import marks. Gorgeous rifles in their own respect but looked like Woody Woodpecker had a go at them.

Thanks mowzerluvr. Am sure you are correct. Bought it from a LGS back in the day when imports were plentiful. Was nothing to brag about but I nearly doubled my money selling.

Are there tell tale signs of a rifle being a Romanian capture? Similar to the RC "X" stamp?

Signs yes somewhat. One of the countries was very aggressive in defacing. A small pin punch and lots of little dipples completely covering the dirty birds. Someone knows which country. Albanian afaik are famous for not being defaced but very used. Finish is really thin and the wood beat up. Maintenance was not very good. Another sign is the serial added on the left of the butt stock. Or the remnants of one since it's popular to try and remove them. Parallel or perpendicular. Russian or Yugo. I don't remember the exact match from country to tell-tale sign but others do I'm sure.

Oh and RCs don't all have Xs. But other signs. The 'interesting' finish on both the wood and metal. Total mismatches in every way. EP lovers.
