"Ach du lieber!"
Still dusty. I've been chasing this one since it first surfaced a few months ago...finally got it. It is still as found and not been disassembled. A real combat vet :happy0180:

Congrats to your new Sauer, I really like this one! :happy0180:

I can't see it in the photos, is your rear sight slide lock bar shortened or in original condition? Many rifles got reworked, but not all.

Looks like a great original rifle. I notice the number on the sling buckle. Did not know they were numbered. My dad's 1940 has an L&F stamping. Thanks for sharing

thanks guys! yes this is the first 98 sling i can remember seeing numbered as well, too bad its not to the rifle.

8x57- heres a shot of the rear sight. I see no signs of rework on the rifle.

wow, I did not even know there was a difference here, learn something everyday! Time to go check a couple rifles, is this unique to Sauer or all/most makers early on? Great rifle Rob, I really like it, nice and untouched, the bluing especially is even better now that I see these pictures.

You are very welcome and thank you for the additional photo.

With your K98k I can't easily determine a rework from the photo and usually the HZa armorer or troop armorer did a very good job, usually it's quite difficult to see a sign of rework. In addition your K98k got assembled around June 1936 and the order is from the same time. But I know later Sauer "c" blocks with a long (not shortened) rear sight slide lock bar and I tend to a well done rework.

Rework 1936.jpg

General Army Communications published by the Army High Command - Berlin, June 10, 1936

362. Shorten the rear sight slide lock bar to the sight of the K 98 k.

For better adjustment of the sight of the carbine 98 k with the right hand, according to the regulations of H. Dv. 130/2a, the rear sight slide lock bar must be shortened at:
The existing carbine 98 k at the troops, existing carbine 98 k at the Heeres-Zeugämter and carbine 98 k from the ongoing production at which the rear sight slide lock bar is flush with the rear sight slide.
It has to be shortened according to drawing O1 E 3565 (Instructions to shorten the rear sight slide lock bar of the carbine 98 k).

The shortening of the rear sight slide lock bar is not disclosed as a shape change.

The drawing O1 E 3565 are to be requested by Heereszeichnungenverwaltung (Army- Drawing- Administration) of the Supreme High Command of the German Army.

To achieve a faultless setting of the sight with the right hand, the rear sight slides are elongated by 2 mm on the carabines manufactured in the future production.

Supreme High Command of the German Army,
May 23, 1936 AHA/In 2 (III).

Here's some comparisons to illustrate what 8x57IS is mentioning, first is a K date with unreworked slider (817), you can see it goes to the edge. Another shot shows a "d" block (#76) 1936 I have, I think it's shortened because it's not perfectly rounded, but I don't know if I ever disassembled it to really check. The last one is a later 36 (#78) with factory shortened slider, the contour is perfectly round.

I’d say shortened. Compare it to the known factory rounded one I posted. The guys that shortened did a good job on most of them.
