I was thinking the same thing, didn’t know if anyone else had seen one. This one looks to have not left the factory. Mint condition and no final proofI will take a shot. IMHO the only reason a G/K43 might be seen with a counter bored barrel is because the crown has suffered undue wear, damage, or had a "ring" at the muzzle. Counter boring would salvage the barrel and put the rifle back in action. I do believe some Volkssturm weapons are known with factory counter bored barrels...possibly the result of salvaging damaged barrels and putting them to use. Counterboring may have also been an attempt to alleviate bore damage at the muzzle in the Volkssturm weapons due to poor handling, care and maintenance by their third-tier users as well.
Makes it sound like a very late ac45. If you care to mention the serial number and possibly add a few photos, the G/K43 Gurus would no doubt be quite interested...I was thinking the same thing, didn’t know if anyone else had seen one. Its this C block:How late of an AC45 is it? p17 in volume 3 talks about Mauser engineers and WaPruf 2 personnel putting together a list of shortcuts for the 98k, one of them is counterboring. Does not directly relate to K43s but it was at least on their mind. I wonder if the barrel has any clues by the lot number or extra proofs etc.
Counterboring on Volkssturm rifles was done, since the front sight was welded to the barrel. Therefore this portion that saw so much heat was counter-bored.Counterboring may have also been an attempt to alleviate bore damage at the muzzle in the Volkssturm weapons due to poor handling, care and maintenance by their third-tier users as well.
Everything else including the bore is like new. It’s a little oddCounterboring has long been the standard way to correct a damaged barrel crown and save the barrel
Muzzle damage accidents can happen anywhere even on a brand new weaponEverything else including the bore is like new. It’s a little odd
In the thread above, it looks like it is a "long barrel" variation. I measured it and it is 1 inch longer than my other K43's. Interesting. This is Interesting, The location of the pin?
I'll take it apart later. Would the stepped barrels be longer? Here is a picture I found of an extended barrel k43, it also appears to have a stepped barrelI have never seen an ac45 with a stepped barrel, pin relocation on sight base, or counterbore either. Post the date code on the barrel. Maybe its a reclaimed barrel that didnt meet the specs earlier, would probably have an "asterix" stamp?
