Firing pin "dimple" depth - how deep is too deep?

I have two rifles that fire the same size cartridge. One leaves a fairly shallow dimple in the primer, while the other dimple depth is causing me some concern about possible primer rupture. The deeper depth is with a Mauser 98, re-barreled to .308cal. My question is this: is there any (simple) way to adjust the firing pin strike depth; and, if so, how is it measured?

Also, is there a minimum & maximum "dimple" depth?

Firing pin protrusion on a M98 should be between .055 and .065". It is measured from the bolt face to the tip of the pin with the pin in the "fired" position. Pins that are too long can be ground and recontoured. Pins that are too short will have to be replaced. Depending on the primer, you can get away with a lot less than .055" as long as there is reliable ignition so I wouldn't worry about that too much. Some modern rifles have far less protrusion and work fine with commercial primers.

Also on 98k site a man has asked what the Firing pin protrusion figure is for 98k bolt . Check Guages are minimum 1.2mm and max. 1.4 mm. Jon
