Hey Guys, Ive had a Dou 42 for quite a few years but never really got down to the bottom of what it is. I got it from my father when he made a huge deal on garands, and 1903s from a dealer he knew almost a decade ago. He told him to throw in the "k98" to sweeten the deal not know anything about it other than that it was a "mauser.". He gave it to me eventually and over the years I pretty much shot it here and there but never tracked down the origins of the rifle til recently. I usually shot it, field stripped the bolt, cleaned it and stuck it back in the safe, thinking it was just a old shooter. Also the fact that I never had much 8MM means I didnt shoot it very often. From what I can tell I have a possible parts gun G24(t) with a bent bolt. A few things:
1) Dou 42 G24(t) - 578Xi with eagle on left side, (2) A80 stamps on the right.
2)Bolt does not match and is not a straight bolt. Bolt parts match each other (098X)with the exception of Firing pin. Looks like the std k98 bolt to me, and there is an x stamped on the bottom back locking lug. Capture?
3)Cant get the front barrel band off (hasnt never been taken off, Im assuming) so I cant get a look under the stock.
If I cant get if off here without marring the gun, I might drop it off by my gunsmith. Its on super tight.
4) Stock has seen some action. It looks good but the top hand guard has cracks in it, and the eagles are faded on the buttstock.
If its just a shooter, parts gun, I was contemplating looking into turret mounts and throwing a scope on it. But if its a good collector piece, I might just keep it the way it is.
From what reading I have done, it doesnt look like any G24(t)s had turned bolts, correct?
Anything else you guys can tell me about the rifle?
Thanks guys!
