Gew-88 / 05 #2 gets hog

After many trips my Gew-88/05 gets a wild hog . It was a sporter I picked up cheap , the best part was a mint .323 CZ Turk barrel . I put a luminated scope on it , am using one of mine K-88 bolts until I find a bent bolt body . It is zeroed for a 225 sp roundnose bullet at sub-sonic velocity . Got a shot on a small [ 80 lb ] hog at 75 yards at night . I aimed for the chest as I wanted to see the terminal effects of that load , A head shot would not tell me anything . With almost no report from the long barrel the bullet hit and the hog dropped instantly . The bullet hit low front chest , about where a hogs heart is and left a pin like entry wound . I could not figure out how that dropped him like that . I found the exit wound on the top of his forehead through the brain . I was shooting downward . The bullet got the heart , hit the rib on the other side and then bounced back and up to the head . This does show why some in the German military wanted to keep this load over the 154 spitzer . Even at sub sonic the bullet did a lot of damage .

I am glad a few of you liked this post . But I was hoping for some comments . I did think it was interesting on a couple of levels . Taking game [ I did pull some meat ] with a 134 year old rifle . For the non hunting guys I found the bullet effects interesting and similar to the old German military testing of bullets . I have read that the colonial troops in Africa liked the old P-88 ammo on game .

I am about to gear up for a hog hunt myself, I plan on using one of my Kar-88s or Kar-71s, I have three each, so plan on giving one to a friend and my father for a Schutztruppe themed hunt in S. FL....close enough to DEA..

Thats interesting a bullet that heavy yawed like that, how fast was it going, what was the barrel length and drop @ 100, 200yrds etc...Any pictures of the rifle? I love hunting with old mausers/German rifles.

I used the heavy bullet because I was wanting to shoot at sub sonic velocity , about 1080 fps in a full size rifle . But there is no reason to go that slow . What bullet you use will depend on what size bore your Kar-88 has . If it is S or no mark it will be a .3208 barrel , if Z marked it will be a .323 . The Hornady .321 dia bullets for the Winchester special will work fine . The 165 or 170 grain handloaded to about 2400 fps out of a carbine , that will be close to a 30/30 load which has worked for hunting for a long time . With a .323 bore you have a large group of bullets to pick from . I use a Norma 200 grain bt sp at 2200 from a rifle and it matches the sights ok .I have hunted with the Kar-71 also . Your bore size will be about .452 +/- . That makes it hard to get a cast bullet to shoot well enough for hunting . I use a jacketed , heavy .452 .45 Colt pistol bullet at about 1600 fps . That will give you 44 mag power which will work for hunting , 100 yards or so . You are going to have to find your own zero for your guns after you pick a load . If you would like help with an exact load just post your bore size and gun / bullet you want to use and I will give you a load or two .

Yeah, I'm hoping to get some more shooting out of my commission rifles as well out of my early kar71 carbines. I'm actually curious how the Chassepot Kar71 performs too. Me, and a good friend have also been having fun shooting a Werndl jager too.

Here are a few of my best HUNTING loads for the old rifles . M-71 short rifle - Hornady XTP or Sierra sp .452 300 grain bullet with 39.7 of Reloader -7 at 1650 fps , 36.2 of I-4198 at 1630 fps OCL 2.78 . K-88 with .3208 groove barrel [ most will be ] Hornady .321 165 flex tip [ OCL = 2.98 ] or 170 sp , 44.6 of I-4350 at 2300 fps , 46.2 of I-4064 at 2460 fps . Here is a great one but the bullet will be hard to find . Norma .3215 198 bt sp , 48.6 of I-4350 for 2240 fps . For .323 Z bores , .323 200 rn with 39.3 of I-4064 for 2040 fps . I have never hunted with my Werndl's or Chassepot .
