Gewehr 98 J.P. Sauer 1917 224c depot rebuild

ax - hole
Been on a dry spell, have not purchased an Imperial Gewehr 98 in over a year. This one popped up for sale almost a month ago, and I probably paid a little too much then I liked for it. But I just fell in love with this JPS Gewehr. I really missed the only one I had in my collection, and sold it too a good friend of mine a few years ago. Yeah I would want it back, but I'm glad he has it for his collection. He did not have one of the Suhl makers in his collection, and he really liked it. So I moved on, and bought another one instead. This one is not 100% factory matching original, like any Gew98 collector would love. Regardless I'm happy with it, and it's a cool one. This rifle was rebuilt damn near from the ground up by depot #16. That unknown depot again, going to start a separate thread on that later. If they would have replaced the barrel this would have been a complete rebuild of a Gewehr 98.

From what I have found the only thing original from when this rifle left the factory. Is the barrel and receiver assembly, the back half of the bolt group, the trigger sear, a few of the stock components, and the firing pin. The bolt was renumbered to match. The trigger guard, and floorplate were renumbered to match. The Rear sight leaf was replaced, and renumbered to match. The magazine follower was an armorers spare. The stock was replaced and renumbered to match. Plus this stock has no numbers inside the stock channel. I'm curious if this stock was a salvaged armorers spare from another rifle. Possibly? The hand guard is also unnumbered, but I'm not 100% sure if it is even German to begin with. I wonder if it was replaced by someone else.

Still I'm glad to be back in the Gewehr 98 game again! But was I truly ever out of the game! Are you kidding me? I'm going to write that book one day remember need more rifles lol!

Very cool depot rebuild, Jordan! These depot rifles are really interesting, and it’s great to see one matching. The stock is from a 1915 DWM, by the way. Wrist acceptance and lack of internal serial are telltale.

That’s a really neat depot rebuild Jordan, one of the most comprehensive jobs I’ve seen. It obviously came out of a quality facility. We discussed this rifle a bit in the group, maybe depot 16 is Cassel. It’s eerily similar to Chris’ post war rebuild completed there. The photo below is the wrist of Chris’ rifle.

Agree 100% Cyrus, not much JPS about it anymore, but it's a fantastic example of a top down depot rebuild. Look like a WMO bolt maybe?

The nuances of these are actually of more interest to me than factory rifles. Doubt we'll ever full crack the code, but grateful for every new example photographed to this extent. Nice snag man!

Sam-- also brilliant theory on Depot 16 being Cassel. It certainly makes sense.

Thanks Chris, it would be cool to do a comparison thread on these two rifles.

Thanks Cyrus looking at my 1914 DWM, it matches the stock acceptance proofs on this cool rebuild. And that is a very good theory Sam creating a separate thread on the subject. Really think your on to something brother!
