I have a ZF4 rig and the tube was mounted off-square or crooked. Any advice or cautions I should concern myself before I square it up? Is there a torque specification for the bands?
I'm not sure how to describe how tight to make them but they do need to be fairly tight. I had just about given up on my ZF4 rig because it would not hold zero. I finally got fed up enough to really crank down on the bands and now it holds perfect zero even after taking the mount on and off. My ZF4 scoped G43 is the most accurate rifle I own.
Obviously tighten it within reason... If you are worried you might damage something that is too tight...
Crank'er down real good....otherwise it will spit the scope out under recoil...guaranteed.
Just make sure you are using the correct size size screwdriver and she is squared up perfectly in the slot or it will slip out and bugger up the screw head and be sure and use a screwdriver as you are less likely to overdue it. If you put blade tip in a ratchet you will stand a better chance of screwing something up because of the torque multiplication.
If it is a accumount the screws are very soft and they will strip the heads easily so keep that in mind.
SM-
Do know if your bands are original or repro? All the replies are correct to be concerned about tightness. Original bands are weaker than repros so if they are "overly tightened" your band could possibile break at the dowel. If you have repro bands, tighener down good.
On second thought screws maybe good too. About bands and parts where screws go into (forgive me my bad command of the English language): difficult to say from these pics. Maybe even good too. You have to take them off. And even then photographs may be not sufficient. My piece of advice: show them someone who has a original rig and is prepared to take it apart for comparison.
Original band screws should have a slight taper at the threaded end but not a sharp point or a flat end like a typical machine screw. See photos.
Bands, dowels, screws, windage cap and sunshade appear to by reproductions. Mount is very nice and so is the scope! Lock it down tight and take it to the range!
Thanks for the comments and photos. I now see the difference. I am not surprised the bands and other items are repro, they just look to clean. Now it is time to zero it. Regards Shannon
SM,
Just out of curiosity, could you post a good close up pic of the mount serial number? If its chalked, its best to clean the chalk out before taking the pic.
