Imperial nA 84/98 Flieger Sawback.......

ersatz

Well-known member
I've had this bayonet for some time and I don't believe I've yet shared this piece with the membership. If I have, please ignore this posting. This bayonet is made by GEBR. HELLER, MARIENTHAL with an undated blade which is common for this manufacturer from 1915-1917 (Carter, Vol. II, pg.181). My translation of the marking is as follows: Flieger-[Ersatz]-Abteilung, Johannisthal, Waffe Nr. 34 (Flying Detachment, Johannisthal, Waffe Nr. 34). Johannisthal is an air field outside Berlin. The unit was raised in 1914. I welcome any comments, etc. regarding the marking. Thanks for looking!

Nice matching unit marking, the possibility of J as location is high. Ersatz Abteilung is this probably not as it would be Fea marked probably.
