Israeli K98

Hello guys. I had no idea where to put this so I picked the forum where the rifle began its life. I just bought a K98 that was made by BNZ in 41. It made its way to Israel after the war and was rechambered in 762.

My question is, does anyone have an idea where I can potentially ID the markings on the receiver? I love history and I would love to find out what some of the markings mean. If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

The only one I can help you with is the 4 57 stamped on the barrel. That is the month/year it was rebarreled to 7.62 in Israel. April 1957.

bnz is Steyr. Of course made in 1941. The proof mark on the left has been defaced, commonly done to get rid of the swastika. The serial number on the left is the original but the other marks to the left and right of it are israeli. On the other side the 4 small marks are original from Steyr. The markings underneath are also Israeli. Barrel markings likely inspection marks as well as the date.

Thanks.

I have scoured the internet looking for any info on what the marking mean and I can't find anything. Which is surprising. You would think someone would have deciphered them.

I wouldn't get your hopes up that they hold great meaning. I have an Israeli K98 with many of those same markings and have seen many other with similar ones. They are most likely inspection and proof marks that were applied as the rifles went through various rebuild programs over the years.

Sure. I wasn't hoping that they were super important stamps, more just curious what they were for. I know on Garands, 1911, and other mil surps most stamps are identified and known. These seem to be a mystery.

Great info...thanks.

I’ve got 5 Israeli 98k’s I’ll need to dig out and go over....one’s an Imperial dated 1917.

Ha! Gotta find ‘em first....been awhile since they’ve been in the Light of Day.

I hear that. I really need a list of what is stored where. I have one Israeli but it's probably been 4-5 years since it's been out and about.

If I keep this up I will start having that problem. I have a lot of things I don't shoot as is. My goal is to shoot everything at least once a year. That is hard to achieve.

I had an Izzie rebarrel that came to me by way of a small country to the south of Mexico. The barrel was in fine shape- shoulda kept it but like so many firearms, it slipped thru my fingers on some trade or other, long forgotten.
