K98 laminated stock - cleaning rod nut removal

Hi everyone.
I have a K98 stock that from the inside has the cleaning rod nut visible. It wont accept a cleaning rod and I can hear metal to metal contact when I try. The cleaning rod it came with (repro) has half the thread missing, so pretty sure its sheared into the nut.
Is there a safe way to remove the nut so that I can clear it. If not then I will leave as is.

Thanks in advance

Most repop rods wont engage the nut correctly so they probably forced it and broke it off.
The later cleaning rod retaining nuts can be removed by using a small punch.

The should be a small hole in the rear of the retaining nut just at the stock line visible.
Most of time you will see a small relief ramp to the rear of the nut. That small hole is used to
raise the nut out of the stock.

See the image of the stock channel. You may have to "dig" a little with the punch to get at the access hole
in the nut. Sometimes I have to use a small wooden wedge to give the tool some leverage.

Thanks very much Bruce.
So I have taken a picture, and just to confirm on the left side of the nut should be a hole to lever the nut upwards ?
I want to be careful as if there is a portion of the cleaning rod protruding , this could tear the wood ?

Pretty sure the rod would have sheared off at the "bind" location and will not protrude much, if any. Either way you have little choice. If the nut is ruined, I have dozens of replacements.

Yep on the left. There is a risk but the damage would be minor..to me worth getting right.
If the nut is not salvageable, I have spares if you needed one.

Besides, it has to come out if you ever want to get the cleaning rod to mount correctly.

Thanks guys. I have been very careful , I have even machined a tool to go right into the hole leaving gap under the laminate surface. Trying to prise it up and it is not having any of it.
Asking myself is it worth the risk, so I have decided that it is best to leave it. I have no idea what state this has been left in and dont want to take chunks out of the wood to find out.

Off topic, and speaking of spares, do any of you have a spare recoil lug that you wish to sell by chance please ?
(I am based in the UK)

The rod is proud of the nut at either end or possibly both ends. Sometimes you can take a small burr on a dremel and remove enough wood to allow the nut to release from the stock.

Thanks Jeff, I went back and tried some more, that thing is wedged in there, time to retreat !

I have recoil lugs. They are tough to match to stocks as they wear at an angle with the wood wear after time. Depending on markings you may want/need, and the wear pattern. Trouble is international shipping of even a small part like the lug can be expensive. $25 for the part plus (guessing) $24-27 for shipping. I just sent some small parts to the UK and shipping was $27 USD. There is a seller in the Netherlands, but his shipping is $19 or so.

Thanks very much, I have managed to get a part from Europe, but nice to know for future if I need more parts.
