K98 Sniper book question

Hi

I'm new to posting on this forum. I've been on the CMP forum for many years and have a broad range of collecting interests that includes WW2 sniper rifles. My father was recently cleaning out his gun closet and gave me a metal box that came with some guns he'd purchased. Turns out it's a JVB scope can (hopefully real) for a ZF39 and it's kindled my interest in German sniper rifles. I'd like to add a K98 sniper rifle to my collection but of course need to do my homework first. Would you please recommend an authoritative book(s) on the subject? Thanks in advance for the assistance. Look forward to sharing photos and discussing things in the future.

Hi Gordon,

When time permits, it would be great if you could post a few pics of your father’s scope can. I’m sure the members on this forum would love to see it.

In terms of literature which covers the subject of German sniper rifles, you’ve got a few options.

1) Karabiner 98k series of books, Volumes I-III (Bruce Karem and Mike Steves)

2) The German Sniper, 1914-1945 (Peter Senich)

3) Sniper Variations of the German K98k Rifle (Richard D. Law)

4) Sniper Scopes and Mounts, 1914-1945 (Robert Spielauer)

Keep in mind, most of these books are out of print and will likely be expensive to purchase, so for the time being, you can also surf this site as there are many informative threads to learn from, and our members will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

In fact, one of our members operates the website I’ve linked below, which has a lot of good info on it if you’re just looking to get started:

Cheers,

SoH

Here are the scope can photos. There's a leather scope cap stuck in the recess on the inside floor of the can (to be removed shortly)

Here is a thread you can look at on the subject of cans.

You may have a Single Claw Scope Can there . Lets see what others think .

As for Books there is also a Book by Robert Spielauer called Scharfschutzen Zielfernrohr Und Montagen 1914-1945 Sniper Scopes and Mounts 1914-1945 its in German and English . Its mainly a Picture Book with captions the pics show good detail and will help you learn what real examples look like .

But the best books as far as I am concerned are the Books by Mike Steves and Bruce Karem or Bruce Karem and Mike Steves which were mentioned earlier .

Hello and welcome to the forum and sniper collecting. It is very difficult but very rewarding. As mentioned above, read a lot before making a purchase. And get second opinions before buying.

Personally, I would not waste my time with Law's book. You will have to unlearn most of the info in his book. Pick up Volume II of Mike and Bruce's books here. It is by far the best info.

Feel free to email me and I'd be happy to help. It's always great to meet new sniper collectors. FYI, nice looking can!

Thank you all for your recommendations /offers of assistance as well as input on the scope can-- I appreciate it!

I ordered Vol.2 of the Karem//Steves book. Thanks

Careful, your going to fall in love and the best part is both authors I mean MAUSER STUDS are members here. This is a very unique community in that we promote open discussion and people actually know their stuff. Read the books, look at what others are posting and ask questions. As good as the books are, and they are spectacular, your going to need to dive into the discussions about these rifles. The amount of information some of these guys store in their heads makes me wonder how they haven't exploded yet, truly amazing.

Thanks. I look forward to learning from the book and the knowledgeable folks here (knowledgeable looks funny when you spell it out)
