Hi !
I purchased this k98a thinking that it had some postwar addings like the sling ring and the magazine, but when I received I change my mind, seems to be reworked rifle, but without signs of any Depot......could it be done before 1945?

It's been refinished and re-proofed. The 8x57IS caliber marking is modern, and that proof mark to the right of it is new as well. It's scratching something at the back of my brain but I can't place it right now.

edit: The floor plate is off a WW2 era K98k

Yes it has modern firing proofs sadly, don't look at them as not the thema, my question is that for me seems "period reworked",I'm right or I'm wrong....

Dear Sirs !
Could you forget for a while the modern proofs and answer my question, the whole rifle could it has been reworked in 1944-5?
Thanks

Short answer: no.

It doesn't look anything like the interwar reworks you get. Most critically, I'll point out that the BS is visibly faded from the refinishing process, and that's a mark you tend to see put right on top at the end of whatever the rifle went through.

It also doesn't' track for Kar98a's I've seen that were pressed into service under the 3rd Reich. Most notably this gun seems to have been polished and refinished with an eye towards looking nice, which isn't something that your typical Kar98a salvage operation during WW2 cared about.

In my opinion someone refinished this rifle well after it left military service. That's just my opinion, though, and i"m not going to lean too heavily on it. I wouldn't buy it, but if someone else comes along and says it tracks with what they've seen maybe listen to them.

I'll also add that the proof on the bolt root looks very post war to me. I'm not going to go too far out on a limb on this since I'm fairly weak on post-war proofs, but it looks like a W. German nitro proof to me. Others would know better, but I believe that proofing the bolt as well as the receiver was a post war innovation.

It's not a terrible rifle if the price is right. The world is full of Kar98a's that have been cut down and are lacking the stacking hook, if not more. From what I'm looking at it appears mostly complete, albeit with some post-war parts. If you want a shooter and the price is right you could certainly do worse, but that is dependent on the price being right.

The price was right, and here in Europe new firing proofs are unavoidable in most of the countrys, maybe you are right and I want to see what it isn't but I still think that the renumbering is not postwar, it reminds me a G98m style....
